Five South Coast escapes (for when it’s still too cold to swim)

Posted on

Dreaming of a coastal escape this long weekend, but don’t want to dip your toes into the (still freezing) water?

Don’t worry, you can still have a relaxing beachside weekend, complete with sand, surf and everything else that makes the South Coast so magical. And the best part? You don’t even have to travel very far.

Batemans Bay

How far

Two hours from Canberra.

Why we love it

It’s a classic for a reason. Beloved by Canberra locals, Batemans Bay offers visitors the classic beach holiday: magnificent natural scenery and amazing food and drink options.

What to do

Taste fresh seafood, take a scenic coastal walk, pack a picnic and (for those brave enough), go swimming, surfing, kayaking and fishing.

Where to eat and drink

The options are endless – especially since Batemans Bay has become something of a foodie hot spot. But if we had to choose, highlights include Crumb Café, Se7en Café, The Oyster Shed, The Boat Shed and Sam’s Pizza.

Jervis Bay

How far

Three hours from Canberra.

Why we love it

With white sand beaches, aquamarine waters, and lush forests, no matter if you’re relaxing beachside or strolling along spectacular White Sands Walk, it promises to be a picture-perfect weekend away.

What to do

Home to two national parks, a menagerie of wildlife, and many charming seaside towns, you’ll lose yourself exploring this South Coast jewel. Book yourself into a dolphin-watching cruise, visit Cape St George Lighthouse and pop into HuskissonVincentia and Hyams Beach.

Where to eat and drink

With so many villages scattered nearby, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

At Stonegrill steakhouse in the bustling coastal town of Huskisson, you cook meat or seafood on a heated volcanic stone yourself, while Five Little Pigs is a dream for brunch.

For those looking for a cold drink, Jervis Bay Brewing Co. and Flamin Galah Brewing Co. are worth a visit, and for special occasions, The Gunyah Restaurant (which is part of the exceptional Paperbark Camp in Woollamia) is a great choice.

Bermagui

How far

Three and a half hours from Canberra (via Batemans Bay).

Why we love it

Elevated coastal chic with exceptional beaches and a famous ocean pool, Bermagui is that little bit further from Canberra, meaning it’s a town filled with residents, not tourists.

What to do

The Bermagui Blue Pool is always worth a visit (even if you don’t plan on swimming), and there are plenty of adventure tours available for those looking for some excitement, from game and reef fishing to sea kayaking. Make sure to take the time to explore the small independent stores , and you’ll be sure to discover something unique to take home.

Where to eat and drink

In the morning, head to Honorbread for exceptional sourdough, croissants or Swedish cinnamon or cardamom buns, and when the ice cream craving hits, visit the Bermagui Gelati Clinic for a cold scoop (or three!). For dinner, book into Octopii, whose Mediterranean flavours showcase Bermagui’s phenomenal seafood perfectly, or head to Mimosa Wines and Restaurant for a gastronomic experience.

Tathra

How far

Three hours from Canberra (via Cooma).

Why we love it

Family-friendly with wide sandy beaches and sweet cafes, this is the place to visit if you’re seeking some more laid-back vibes. And with the town’s main street facing directly onto the beach, how can you not be instantly relaxed with a view like that?

What to do

Let the pristine waters of Kianinny Bay take your breath away, go mountain biking, and explore the Tathra Headland Walk, which links the Tathra Wharf with the heritage-listed and recently renovated Tathra Hotel. If that’s not enough, there’s plenty of opportunity for fishing, boating, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding!

Where to eat and drink

Wild Orchid is a relaxed, contemporary café serving simple, vibrant seasonal food, while you can’t go past the Wharf Local for a light lunch or morning tea. If craft beer is your thing, pull up a seat at the historic Tathra Hotel, which is home to the Humpback Brewery. Grab some food from the bistro and make a day of it.

Merimbula

How far

Three hours from Canberra.

Why we love it

With rugged ocean beaches and tranquil coastal lakes, Merimbula is the perfect destination for those seeking an adventure.

What to do

The real question is what can’t you do? From water sports to exploring Merimbula Aquarium and the 6km Merimbula Main Beach, to tasting the best local seafood, you’ll be looking to extend your stay to fit it all in.

Where to eat and drink

A little wine bar with Parisian vibes, Bar Superette might have a tiny kitchen but it has a mighty menu while you’ll find one of the coolest South Coast bars at Dulcie’s Cottage.  If right on the beach is where you want to be at all times (and why wouldn’t it be?), Beach Bar Kiosk will be your go-to destination for delicious, simple food and great coffee.
