Host a DIY fundraiser this July for DVCS

Posted on

It’s DIY July again this year for the Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) and they want your help.

What is DIY July? It’s a really simple concept – just host your own fundraising event and donate the money to DVCS!

DVCS has set a target for the generous Canberra community to collectively raise $10,000 during DIY July. Is this something you could contribute to?

How far does $10,000 go at DVCS?

Well here is a quick example:

  1. Emergency accommodation for a woman and her two children for one week, plus food packs, grocery vouchers and phone credit: $2,500
  2. Emergency accommodation for a woman for one week, plus food packs, grocery vouchers and phone credit: $1,500
  3. 2 x School Holiday Picnics for the children and their families we support: $4,000
  4. 1 x Support Group place for a woman or child we support: $2,000

NEED SOME INSPIRATION?

Some ideas of successful fundraising activities include garage sales or bake sales. It’s a perfect time to clean out your garage or shed, storage cupboards and wardrobes and turn that clutter into cash. Alternatively, if baking is your thing, get baking and sell some cupcakes at school or your local shopping centre.

Workplace morning teas or lunches are another great idea. Engage your co-workers and ask them to show off their baking or cooking skills with the rest of your colleagues. Everyone pays a set amount to enjoy the home-cooked goodness!

Of course, girls nights in and games nights are another big winner. A perfect opportunity to grab your friends, spend the night at home and donate the money you would have spent on that cocktail to DVCS instead.

If your event is open to the public, DVCS can support you with advertising your event to their network.

If your event is a private or workplace event, DVCS would love to share a photo of your event on social media telling the world how fantastic you are. DVCS can also provide you with some branded material to help you with your invitations or advertising.

Why does DVCS need your help?

Because DVCS supports over 4,500 people each year. So far, this financial year DVCS are on target to respond to over 60,000 contacts (that’s over 160 per day) and spend over $120,000 on emergency accommodation.

The vast majority of people DVCS supports are women aged between 25 and 44 years of age. All of those people come from the ACT region.

Not only does DIY July help raise funds for a terrific local organisation, but it helps spread and create awareness about family, domestic and intimate partner violence and helps build awareness of DVCS.

You do know people that experience domestic and family violence, but you might not know you do. The people DVCS support very much could be your sister or mum, your best friend, your neighbour or your work colleague.

This is why the awareness your DIY July event creates is worth a lot more than the money you raise.
