Is this Canberra’s cutest laundromat? And what’s in the secret room?

Bunkering down in a laundromat to get through a week’s worth of dirty clothes is hardly a high point in anyone’s week.

But this weekend a sweet little place is opening in Dickson, promising hot sudsy cycles with a side of arcade entertainment and an opening party with free Pattysmith burgers and Spilt Milk gelato.

N-Less Washing, on Cape Street (next to High Road and opposite Dominos) is the brainchild of Aaron Ravi, who thought there was a place in the market for a laundromat people actually wanted to visit rather than one they attended in sufferance.

To be fair, the spot has a long history as a Laundromat, having been around for close to 40 years. But now it’s come up a notch or three.

For one thing, the place is aesthetic from the get-go, with exposed Canberra bricks, a wall of 24 gleaming stainless steel washers and dryers, leather chairs, wooden tables, a coffee machine and snack vending machine and…an arcade games room.

With a secret games room…

Yep, put down your phone (Ravi said he came up with the idea because he wants people to spend less time on their devices). Instead, grab the wheel of a Nintendo Cruise ‘n’ Blast, chuck a basketball around or take out some aggression in a Street Fighter video game. A pinball machine is on order for those whole like it old school.

The laundromat is fully automated, with soap automatically dispensed and the whole cycle tap-and-go. And if you do need to spend time on your phone or even laptop, there is free wifi and somewhere comfy to sit.

“I think a lot of people in apartments in Dickson and surrounding areas may not have dryers or only small machines and with 10 and 20 kilo machines, you can wash and tumble dry an entire wardrobe in under an hour,” says Ravi.

The place is open 24 hours, seven days and under video surveillance. Family and kids are (obviously) most welcome.

The grand opening is Sunday 30 March from 10 am to 2 pm with a day of free burgers, gelato giveaways, $2 arcade games, a coffee van, sausage sizzle and face-painting.

The whole laundromat experience will never be the same!
