Mentor Walks return to help put a pep in your career step

Posted on

It’s the chance to build networks, gain opportunities, develop careers and walk 5000 steps in the fresh Canberra air before the working day begins—Mentor Walks is back on Wednesday 6 April.

The who’s who of Canberra businesswomen, entrepreneurs, and accomplished women from the public and private sectors are hitting the streets once again to take part in the unique ‘walk and talk’ mentoring session that helps local women reach their career goals.

Aiming to make mentoring more accessible to women who may not have partial people in their network to seek advice, Mentor Walks is now in its fourth year of pairing some of Canberra’s most respected female business leaders with aspiring women.

In partnership with ANU, this year seven walks will run in Canberra with mentors including Ilea Buffier, Catherine Carter, Sally Wheeler, Kate Waterford, Traci-Ann Byrnes, Rae Frances, and more.

Started in Sydney by entrepreneurs Bobbi Mahlab and Adina Jacobs, Mentor Walks is now operating in eight cities across Australia with plans to launch in New Zealand in May. More than 5000 women have walked with 380 mentors since the program launched.

According to Bobbi, Mentor Walks provides women with the important opportunity to workshop ideas, gain insight and discuss challenges with some of Australia’s most successful female leaders.

“These conversations are an important part of helping women take the next step in their career and ultimately developing the next generation of feminist leaders,” she says.

“Career women have issues big and small and often it is hard to find impartial people to go to for advice. Mentor Walks give women access to experienced people that can help them workshop issues and move forward.”

At each walk, mentees are pre-matched with a mentor and a fellow mentee based on a topic or query they have pre-submitted. The questions are then collectively discussed by the small group as they walk for the hour. According to Bobbi, there’s no question too big or too small.

“Our mentors provide these aspiring female leaders with advice on challenges they’re facing now, such as getting a promotion, asking for a pay rise, influencing executive teams, managing up or getting buy-in from investors,” she says.

“It’s fantastic to see the impact the program is having.”
