Nutbush Civic Limits – Your Time to Join a Flash Mob
Posted on
You know the dance by heart, now join the flashmob!
Next Tuesday, Tina Turner’s iconic song will reverberate across Civic Square following a call by Canberra Museum and Gallery for enthusiastic Nutbush dancers to congregate and melt the pavement.
It’s been just over 12 months since the world lost iconic singer Anna Mae Bullock (as Tina was christened) and this time last year the flashmob reached a rowdy crowd of 200. Some came in wigs, some came in suits. All were there to honour the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll and its almost certain they had a good time doing it—judging by the laughter and enthusiasm.
Canberra Museum and Gallery have again put out the call, wanting to top last year’s numbers. So get your thermals on, tease your hair, grab your friends and get out there. Kick off is at 12.30.
The song was named after the tiny town of Nutbush in Tennessee where Tina was born, but the dance is distinctly Australian (Americans have never heard of it). It is usually performed by school kids, or more often by inebriated guests at weddings or birthdays. Whatever, we are here for it.
In fact, HerCanberra is so there for the Nutbush that our Associate Editor Emma Macdonald travelled to the little old town in Tennessee last year for this extraordinary performance, ably assisted by her daughter and next-generation devotee.
You’re welcome.

The flashmob coincides with concert production TINA The Ultimate Tribute to The Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll performing at Canberra Theatre Centre the same evening.
South African singer and TV star Caroline Borole helms the show in the role of ‘Tina’ and the concert format features two hours of back-to-back Tina Turner hits from the 60, 70s, 80s and 90s, all performed live on stage, including (Simply) The Best, What’s Love Got To Do With It, River Deep Mountain High, We Don’t Need Another Hero, Nutbush City Limits, Proud Mary, Private Dancer and more.
