A Few Good Words from Vendulka
									Posted on
If you’re in the mood for a little introspective reflection, kickstart your reverie with Vendulka’s new single, ‘Good Words’.
Freshly released last Friday 3 May, ‘Good Words‘ is delicate yet rich, sweeping you up into its rhythmic waves of instrumentals and the 21-year-old’s captivating vocals.
It strikes the perfect balance between inquisitive and sincere; the ethereal journey you’re taken on is steered with conviction.
Originally from Cooma, Vendulka Wichta made her debut on the Australian music scene in 2012, making an appearance on the X-Factor aged just 14. Two years later she released her first EP and, upon finishing high school in 2015, she began performing in gigs and shows around Canberra.
After releasing an album in December 2016, Vendulka headed off to Canada in search of some new inspiration for her music.
“The move allowed me to have such a different perspective on life, not just on surroundings but on my outlook,” she says of the trip. “I grew so much in so many ways. I figured out who I was when I was alone.”
The young artist looks back on a minor identity crisis that was initiated by a broken arm, and how she couldn’t do any of the things she had planned to do during her stay in Canada.
“I couldn’t snowboard and I couldn’t play guitar. I was forced to work on myself as a person first, so I could truly envision the artist I wanted to become.”
‘Good Words’ elaborates on this exploration of “what it is to be human”. On the creation of the track, Vendulka insists that “when inspiration strikes, you have to jump on it.” She found inspiration at a Gang of Youths concert, at home with a cup of tea, and from collaborative work with other artists, namely local guitarist Viktor Rufus.
“Piece by piece we had friends fall into the studio to add their own magic to the song.”
She explains how people who “wouldn’t usually be in Canberra would pop in at the right moment just when we needed that extra little something on the track.”
Vendulka admits that she didn’t know what ‘Good Words’ was about until she had finished writing it and sent it off to producer Josh Richens. She discloses that “it came from a place of feeling overwhelmed with the state of our world”; the single is about returning to “the bigger picture and caring for one another.”
Vendulka recently played at the Cobargo Folk Festival in March and was awarded a Canberra YWCA Great Ydeas Creativity Grant.
“I’m using that to fund a collaboration with an incredible Australian producer,” she says.
When asked about whether she writes for a specific demographic, Vendulka says that her music is “not tailored to any specific audience.”
“I think at our core humans learn the same lessons even if the specific details vary,” she explains. “I create – and just hope that people resonate with it.”
Catch Vendulka in her element at Smith’s Alternate on Thursday 23 May where she will be performing ‘Good Words’ with her band.
“We’ve got a few sneak peeks of unreleased tracks to share so it’ll be a nice preview for anyone who wants one. We’re already working on the next release.”
