From writing in Canberra’s home of stories to getting a film adaptation made in Hollywood,…
From Canberra radio darling to internet sensation, it’s been a big couple of years for Tanya Hennessy.
From her hilarious ‘Things People Say To…‘ videos to her #realtalk articles, Tanya won hearts around the globe, amassing nearly one million Facebook followers. But it wasn’t just the general public who became obsessed with her.
She’s starred in a Northern Territory Tourism commercial, had her videos shared by Glamour Magazine, Cosmopolitan, News.com.au and more, co-hosted the Bachelor Unpacked and The Bachelorette Unpacked and become a sought-after comedy creator. Her work was acknowledged by a nomination for a Cosmopolitan Woman of the Year Award and an ACRA (Australian Commercial Radio Award) for Best Documentary.
Now we can reveal that Tanya will follow in the footsteps of fellow funny ladies Rosie Waterland, Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer in writing a book. Tanya broke the news to fans through The Morning Show with Larry Emdur and Sally Obermeder last week—and it’s safe to say people were excited.
Speaking to us from her hometown of Newcastle where she’s focusing on the final edits of the book, Tanya says she was overwhelmed when the publisher approached her earlier this year.
“It was amazing, I couldn’t believe it,” she says. “It’s been locked in since February, so as you can imagine it was so hard not telling everyone until now.”
While Tanya says she was pleasantly surprised by the offer, it wasn’t as out of the blue as you might think.
“At the start of the year, I wrote down a list of things I wanted to accomplish in 2017,” she explains. “And I’m not kidding, on it was ‘win an ACRA’, ‘be nominated for Cosmopolitan Woman of the Year’ and ‘write a book’. I didn’t think they would happen though!”
“I don’t believe in manifestation, but now I really do believe in writing down your goals. I still cannot believe that some of these things—that seemed crazy at the time—came true. I’m going to put the list in the book.”
As for the book itself, it will come out in June 2018 and Tanya explains that it will be part memoir, part advice and completely down to earth, expanding on her already much loved signature brand of relatable comedy.
Formatted in an A-Z theme, the book’s chapters will expand on some of the topics her much-talked-about articles have covered, including: her radio career, making new friends as an adult and going global with her videos.
As for what will be on Tanya’s goals list for 2018, for now she’s got to keep her cards close to the chest, but let’s just say she’s got some big things in store for next year and you’ll be hearing her on the Hit Network again in 2018.
“I can’t reveal too much about what’s next,” she says. “But I’m really, really excited.”
