Raise your glass to female success and feminine power at the National Museum

Posted on

There are plenty of ways to celebrate International Women’s Day. But if you just can’t wait until March 8, the National Museum of Australia is getting in early and hosting a celebration next week that is not to be missed.

It is putting a tasty twist on the theme of female empowerment—inviting some of the city’s top women winemakers, distillers, and brewers to discuss how they cracked into male-dominated industries.

And, of course, there will be ample opportunity to sample their fine products.

Join Kate Day of In Two Minds Wines, Claudia Roughley of Underground Spirits and Tracy Margrain of Bentspoke Brewing as they discuss the challenges and joys of creating bespoke alcohol and what International Women’s Day means to them.

The evening also includes an exclusive exhibition viewing of Feared and Revered: Feminine Power through the Ages, which should be considered compulsory viewing during IWD week.

This exhibition celebrates the power and diversity of female spiritual beings in cultural traditions and beliefs across the globe. Spanning six continents and 5,000 years, it explores how goddesses, demons, witches, spirits and saints have shaped our understanding of the world and features more than 160 objects from the British Museum’s exceptional collection.

But back to wine, spirits and beer for a moment, the panel speakers will be able to reflect on their personal journeys, and ways in which they are revered (rather than feared!) after sharing their product.

Kate from In Two Minds Wines honed her vigneron skills in Australia and overseas before establishing her label with friend, sister-in-law and fellow winemaker, Nina Day. Together they produce exciting and bold small-batch wines. For these two busy mums, wine is much more than a sensory analysis. It’s a conduit for bringing friends and family together, having a moment to relax, and enjoy the simple things in life.
