Calling all Canberra singles: Would you do a photography session as a first date?
Posted on
Picture this: you’ve known your date for roughly four minutes, and a photographer is gently suggesting you lean in and share a laugh. Awkward? Possibly. Kind of lovely? Also possibly.
That’s the idea behind the Stranger Shoot Series, a new project from Canberra photographer Kirah, who’s inviting local singles to be paired up for a blind date photo session. It’s part social experiment, part fun, and if a little matchmaking happens along the way, she won’t be complaining.
Kirah is currently in her final semester of nursing, and photography is a passion that’s grown alongside her social presence. What draws her to it is simple. “Photos are a way to capture feeling and for people to remember that feeling,” she says.
Kirah first spotted the concept on TikTok, and it ticked a lot of boxes: a way to push outside her comfort zone, and a perfect fit for her 2026 theme. This is her year of saying yes, and she’s hoping to bring other people along for the ride.

Signing up is simple. You send through your name, age, a photo of yourself, and a little about you, then fill out a short questionnaire covering what you look for in a person and your common interests.
There’s also a very Canberra question in there: who wouldn’t you want to be paired with? In a city this size, it’s a sensible one.

Kirah’s first pairing snapped.
Kirah then pairs people up loosely based on their answers. She arrives with a set of icebreaker questions and pose ideas ready to go, and each shoot has a light theme to help everyone feel at ease.
Kirah’s main message is that this is meant to be low pressure. Here’s what she wants you to know:
- Everything stays within your comfort zone
- The session runs on prompts, so you’re never left wondering what to do
- You don’t need to be a model (or feel like one)
- There are no expectations, whether that’s a spark or a new friend
- It’s a chance to step out of your bubble, have fun, and try something a little different
If you’re willing to step out of your bubble for an afternoon, the worst case is a good story for the group chat, and the best case is a second date.
