The latest high street brand to help democratise the wedding industry (a trend we LOVE), Forever…
When Naomi Hogie looks back at the drawings she created as a young school girl, she smiles.
In her art books are drawing after drawing of glamorous, feminine wedding dresses and gowns. Today, Naomi does more than draw beautiful, intricate gowns. She creates them, especially for modern brides who want to feel sexy and be a bit edgy. These are brides who want styles that are anything but average.
The Perfect Gown is a Canberra-based design studio (by appointment only), with Naomi designing bridal wear for seven years. A formally trained designer, Naomi started The Perfect Gown to custom make bridal wear that didn’t cost the earth. “I wanted to custom make perfect gowns that don’t cost tens of thousands of dollars but will still be remembered for a lifetime,” says Naomi.
After seven years in doing so, Naomi took the next step and launched her own collection under the ‘Naomi Peris Bridal’ label. The first collection was released in 2015. The second will be launched on the catwalk at this year’s FASHFEST (8.30pm show on Friday 30 September).
“My first collection showcased gowns handmade using French laces, intricate beading and fine tailoring—with a modern sophistication and timeless romance,” says Naomi. “This collection is bold. Think Egyptian tribal princess. Think Cleopatra with big neckpieces and arm bands. Think lots of gold, ostrich feathers, sequins, beading and lots of lace which is still at trend.”
Without giving too much away, Naomi also says guests at FASHFEST will see a gorgeous printed silk blue cap and a feathered ‘bum attachment’. “It sounds ridiculous,” laughs the designer, “but when you see it, it’s stunning. It’s exciting for me to launch my own collections, and I’m thrilled to be at FASHFEST.”
The pieces in the collection will be available for viewing in Naomi’s showroom/studio after FASHFEST (by appointment only).
With the Perfect Gown, Naomi can produce affordable gowns because of her business model. She doesn’t have a retail outlet and doesn’t sell online.
“I’ve cut back on overheads and work direct with our factory to help control costs,” says the designer. “We also develop an online app where brides can design their own perfect gown. Times are changing. Brides are realising they don’t have to buy a set style but can design what they want. And Canberra brides don’t have to go to Sydney or Melbourne to shop for their special day.”
Before opening The Perfect Gown, Naomi ran two of her own women’s fashion labels and one men’s. She’s been designing for 13 years all up.
FASHFEST is on 29 September to 1 October. Three nights. Six distinct shows, two a night. Tickets are on sale now: www.fashfest.com.au
