A seven-year harvest: Kylie Fogarty’s In The Vines exhibition

Art and wine. Name a better pairing—we’ll wait.

Wine lovers will know that good wine is all about the art of waiting—of tending lovingly to a crop that you know will one day bear delicious fruit. Artist Kylie Fogarty knows a thing or two about this, having spent seven years as artist in residence at Murrumbateman’s Barton Estate Winery.

Over almost a decade, Kylie has soaked up the slow pace of life, lush landscape and careful craft of Barton Estate to inform her evocative paintings and drawings.

Now, the fruits of Kylie’s labour will be exhibited as part of DESIGN Canberra Festival when her new artist-in-residence exhibition In The Vines opens this Saturday 14 November.

Art (and wine) lovers will have two chances to meet the artist—the first at the exhibition opening this Saturday at 2 pm, and on Sunday 29 November at a Meet The Artist event, both taking place at Barton Estate. After both events, guests are encouraged to sample the Estate’s wares. Sounds like a winning combination to us.

Kylie explains that she is “infatuated with drawing as a means to explore our world” and has drawn on Barton Estate’s rollercoaster of a year—smoke, bushfire, hail, COVID-19—when creating this exhibition, as well as drawing on her previous six years as artist in residence.

To Kylie, drawing is her means of expressing the atmosphere of the moment, using a variety of tools to capture the moment, and this process has formed the basis of the works included in the Exhibition. Line work and mark making are utilised to evoke the discoveries she found whilst exploring the vineyard.

Kylie’s work has been exhibited at Canberra galleries such as Aarwun Gallery, Gallery of Small Things, and Humble House gallery, however, she’s exited to see this body of work come together in Barton Estate’s atmospheric Murrumbateman cellar door.

“The Barton Estate Cellar Door has incredible charisma, set amongst the vines, it’s the ideal spot to be exhibiting the works in my Solo Exhibition,” says Kylie.

Established in 1997, Barton Estate Winery is a small, family-owned producer that was founded by CSIRO plant biology researchers Bob Furbank and Julie Chitty. So perhaps it’s no surprise that they produce excellent cool climate wines.

In The Vines exhibition will run from 14–29 November at The Barton Estate Cellar Door, which is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday-Sunday, with bookings preferred.
