You cringe. Absolutely cringe when the man in your life dons a suit and doesn’t…
I want to look better naked. Naked-faced, that is.
‘No makeup makeup’ is all the rage at the moment, and I’m a total convert, as I’m sure most skin product junkies are. I love spending time and money on my skin, because the better it is, the less time and money you spend ‘hiding it’ behind thick makeup, and the better you feel without any makeup at all.
I got over the idea of putting on makeup before my boyfriend woke up a long time ago and the same goes for wearing makeup to the gym…and Woolies…and most weekends. So I’m always on the lookout for ways that I can improve the canvas without applying any paint, so to speak.
With the news that the 2017 Pirelli calendar will feature stars like Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Helen Mirren makeup free and unretouched, it’s clear the women all around the world are looking to embrace a more natural view of themselves and are encouraging the world to do the same.
Just before her Vegas wedding, our Creative Director Javier had a Lash Lift at The Lab (formerly Browlab) and we all crowded around her face when she came back to the office. Lo and behold, her lashes looked as if she had just curled them and they stayed that way, even until she arrived back after her honeymoon six weeks later.
Needless to say, I was sold.
With a wedding and innumerable Christmas events coming up in December, I booked well in advance (because my gosh they are popular) at The Lab for a little pre-festive season Lash Lift.
But what exactly is a Lash Lift?
“A Lash Lift is a pretty intricate operation on behalf of the artist as far as preparing in every way possible for that perfect result,” says Telisa Peizley, makeup artist and lash lift expert at The Lab.
What happens during the treatment?
The treatment includes a complimentary collagen eye treatment and involves lifting each individual lash with precision onto a curved silicone pad and holding them in place with water soluble glue – permanently curling the lashes.
“The placement of the lashes is key,” says Telisa. “This step is followed by the application and removal of lifting solution, setting solution, tint and finally nourishing oil. We recommend coming in ready to relax as the entire service can take anywhere between one to one and a half hours.”
I arrive early afternoon on a Saturday to The Lab’s breezy loft. It’s quiet and summery and Telisa directs me to a reclining chair. Once I’m in and a neck pillow has my head all comfy-like, I close my eyes and Telisa gets to work.
Obviously, it’s pretty hard to describe the process since you can’t see, but I can tell you that it’s painless and Telisa says that many clients choose to take a power nap while everything is happening, as you must keep your eyes closed for the entire treatment.
“There should be no pain associated with a lash lift,” she says. “Super weird, often incredibly unusual sensations are pretty standard but it is more relaxing than anything else.”
SO HOW LONG DOES IT LAST FOR?
Telisa says the signature Lab Lift can last anywhere from six to 12 weeks (the latter is more likely). This can be determined by your lifestyle, lash cycle and aftercare, which they walk you through during and after your treatment.
This is all part of The Lab’s approach to beauty – “lady lazy beauty” even, where little to no maintenance is required.
“The odd brush and application of nourishing mascara is all you’ll ever need,” says Telisa. “In fact, you can rock your new lashes sans mascara thanks to the lift and tint, so it makes mornings even easier!”
After three weeks my lashes are springy, upright and glossy. Mascara has never looked better and I’ve received numerous compliments, but the best part has definitely been the enhancement to my ‘blank canvas’ of no makeup.
Lash Lifts start at $120 and can be booked via phone on 6230 4143. Find more information here: the-lab.com.au.
