Handmade Market goes online in Corona-time

Posted on

For the last 10 years, Canberra’s Handmade Market has celebrated all things beautiful, local and handmade at packed events. COVID-19 has changed all that. So it’s moving online.

This weekend, EPIC should be filled with tens of thousands of keen shoppers perusing the lovingly-created products of small Australian made designers and producers at Handmade Market. Instead, the pavilions will be empty—the popular event cancelled due to COVID-19.

As we all adjust to our new normal, event organisers acted quickly to salvage what they could, adding a virtual market to their website allowing handmade designers—who have spent months preparing stock to bring to Canberra for the March event—the opportunity to sell online.

The Handmade Virtual Market will be live on the Handmade Canberra website from 10 am Saturday 21 March to 4 pm Sunday 22 March.

“It’s been a whirlwind of a week, but we’re thrilled that we can continue to support our Australian made designers during this difficult time,” says Handmade Managing Director Julie Nichols.

Acorn & Squirrel’s adorable hot cross bun earrings will be on sale at the Virtual Market.

To shop the Virtual Market, customers simply need to visit handmadecanberra.com.au from 10am Saturday 21 March, and they will be directed straight to the Virtual Market.  There, they’ll be able to browse the online stores of many traders who were scheduled to appear at the physical market this weekend and make purchases through their websites.

Virtual Market traders will be offering shoppers deals and discounts across the weekend, and the Handmade team will be posting live updates and giveaways across their social media channels, with some great prizes to be won.

The silver lining? Shoppers can join in from anywhere around the globe.

You might need a hobby over the coming months. How about Homelea Lass’ Chunky Crochet Kit?

“We’re very excited that for the first time, people don’t have to be in Canberra to experience a little bit of the Handmade magic” says Julie.

“As a small business ourselves, Handmade will continue to work on strategies to support our designers and keep this ship afloat as we navigate our way forward.

“After this is all over, we hope to return to EPIC holding Canberra’s favourite food and design market at the level that you have come to expect from us.”
