We live a disposable existence. It’s something that gnaws away at Louisa de Smet who…
When it comes to operating one of Canberra’s oldest antique emporiums, Doug Mulley and his team know their stuff.
Their store, Canberra Antiques Centre is a much-loved gem of Fyshwick’s Townsville Street—an Aladdin’s cave of carefully curated vintage, retro and genuine antiques.
Made up of a collective of dozens of like-minded local traders, Canberra Antiques Centre’s slogan is “Recycle In Style”—but that doesn’t mean you’ll find any old pre-loved items. In fact, they only sell antique, vintage, industrial and authentic collectables.
And, if you’re picturing piles of precipitously placed glassware and records that make you worried to even pick something up—think again. Instead of dark corners and windy paths, the space is clean, brightly lit and generously-spaced—perfect for COVID-safe shopping.
As for the atmosphere, Doug is quick to add that the music is “bright, up-tempo and recognisable from the 1950s through to the early 2000s—no painful classical stuff to frighten off our ‘everyday’ clients.”
“We wanted to set up a gallery where people could visit, without being coerced, to select from thousands of individually curated second-hand items to adorn their homes and lifestyles. We are careful with our descriptions and guarantee the authenticity of the things we sell.”
With troves of vintage clothing and furniture, militaria, industrial gear and tools, there’s something for everyone to browse—for as long as they like. If you do find something that tickles your fancy, there are layby services available, and local deliveries at minimal cost.
Vintage lovers are also encouraged to keep an eye on Facebook, where the Centre posts photos of pieces as they go onto the shop floor.
Do you have something antique or vintage? The Canberra Antiques Centre also buys quality items from the general public, from single pieces to deceased estates. Contact them for more information.
