South Jerra: they had us at ‘outdoor dining precinct on the park’

Posted on

Just 20 minutes from Civic, a new suburb is shaping up as an unexpected lifestyle destination.

With plans for South Jerra’s expansive town park approved by Queanbeyan–Palerang Regional Council on Wednesday, the scene is now set for the development of a truly impressive built community. And unsurprisingly, it’s the proposed outdoor dining precinct right on the park’s edge that has us most excited.

“Think of it as a combination of the Kingston Foreshore and Queanbeyan’s town park,” says Jamie Cregan, Village Building Co’s General Manager (ACT Region).

“Ideally, we’d like to lure in a microbrewery or gastropub, some restaurants and potentially a bakery café – it’ll be a place where families can eat, drink and relax while watching the kids safely play. There’s nothing else like it in the region.”

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Village have big plans for South Jerra, and the town park is central to their vision.

“The town park will have a water splashpad, a 10-metre tall play equipment centrepiece with multiple slides, and an enclosed skywalk combined with climbing opportunities,” says Jamie.

“There will be ‘nature play’ activities, BBQ facilities, and a comprehensive learn-to-ride facility that will teach kids road rules and road safety.”

There will also be an outdoor gym, an event space, a discovery walk featuring huge bronze statues of native animals by renowned artists Gillie and Marc, a dog park, and the highly anticipated Regional Sports Complex which will include a 3000-seat indoor stadium, around 23 hectares of playing fields, and an aquatic centre.

That’s in addition to Jerrabomberra’s established amenities, which include a supermarket, petrol station, schools, child care facilities, post office and medical centre.

“What we are trying to do is create opportunities for residents, their families and friends to meet, socialise and play together, and to create memories,” says Jamie.

“Life is a collection of experiences and moments and everything that you cherish. And that’s what we’re trying to give people at South Jerra.”
