Makeup trends for 2024 (according to a local makeup artist)

We went from thin tadpole brows, to pomade-drawn blocky brows, to the more recent fluffy feathery laminated brows.

We upgraded from Strawberry Lipsmacker to the Laniege Lip Sleeping Mask. We put down that dreaded Maybelline Dream Mousse and (finally) got shade matched correctly at Mecca.  

Reminiscing on these times got me thinking what is next for makeup in 2024? And should we be scared?  

 As a part-time makeup artist and content creator, these predictions come from some heavy research and observations (mainly TikTok). But I want to remind you that you don’t have to adopt any new trends unless you want to. Makeup is expressive and ever-evolving, enjoy it, and don’t take it too seriously! 

Resurgence Era

For some it’s cringy and for others it’s heaven! The makeup world loves to revive classic and iconic makeup trends from all the decades. It allows us to reminisce but also celebrate the timelessness of certain beauty trends. I expect to see lots of nostalgia come into play in 2024.

Barely there base

This year could be all about a barely-there base. Whilst we have transitioned out of full glam to soft glam to the “clean girl” look, I forecast a focus on not going too dewy. Think: embracing the natural skin with a more matte finish, meeting in the middle of all previous base trends.

Cool-toned eye makeup

For a while there, warm-toned eyeshadow reigned supreme. However, recently we’ve seen people reaching for cooler tones like greys, pale blues, white and even frosty silvers. With icons like Pamela Anderson coming back into the spotlight, we see people reaching for that smokey rockstar girlfriend vibe.  

Frosted lips

It’s the year of the FROST (’90s babies don’t be scared). We now have duo-chromed pigments that will still give us that glow whilst still hydrating our lips. Look out – this might be your new sheer lip obsession.

Since the release of the film Priscilla, her makeup has been trending on Pinterest, which indicates to us that her mod-themed style in the ’60s is capturing the attention of beauty enthusiasts. Pair a winged eyeliner with vibrant eye shadows (and maybe a beehive hairstyle, if you feel bold). And you’ve got yourself a Priscilla-esque look.  

Blue mascara

If you’re anything like me and you closely watch beauty releases, you would have noticed a few brands releasing blue mascaras. If  you have blue or green eyes, this will accentuate and make your eyes appear brighter. If you have brown or hazel eyes, this will add a contrast to the darker eye colour. It may be out of your comfort zone, but this is a subtle way to incorporate colour into your routine!

Smudged liner

Eyeliner is a signature style that tends to have a permanent spot in our routines, whether it’s winged liner, waterline or tightlined. Liner can flatter every type of eye shape. Think of a smudged eyeliner as the minimalist version of a smoky eye. If you’re someone who is developing on their technique or have a shaky hand, this new trend of smudged eyeliner might be for you! Close your eyes and place your eyeliner pencil in between your lid and waterline, rub the liner back and forth to achieve this look.  

Peachy cheeks

2023 was all about the baby doll blush, a true pink. We’ve seen people delving into different shades of hot pink, but I predict this year we will transition into softer peachy tones. The cool thing about peach tones is they work for every complexion. Fairer skin tones will find the warm, reddish-pink hue can add a healthy flush to the cheeks without making the skin look overheated or flushed. Deeper skin tones will find apricot shades, which can bring a softer enhancement to their features, whilst still adding a noticeable flush.
