Imagine a private hotel room introducing a stunning collection in a wide range of sizes, laid out especially for you to browse, try on and explore at your leisure.
Welcome to a trunk show, a concept originating from 20th-century boutiques, where shopping was less about hitting every store on the street and more about the experience – about taking your time.
It’s this attitude that Melbourne’s Digbys Boutique hopes to embody when they host their first trunk show in Braddon next week from 10-13 May.
While the name may not be well-known to most Canberrans, Digbys is something of a Melbourne institution, established in 1972. Digbys’ DNA is the latest exclusive fabrics, style, excellent customer service, value for money, and proudly Australian made.
For owner Charlie Digby, the design process starts in Europe. He travels with his small team to Première Vision in Paris twice per year to personally select fabrics for Digbys’ next collections, which they source from specific regions based on their specialities, such as stretches and silks from Como and wools and cashmeres from Prato – essentially, the best mills out of Italy and France.
The designs are influenced by the trends coming out of the streets of Paris and Milan. A marriage of being current and defying a use-by date. The styling blurs seasons, day/night, formal and informal.
While Digbys’ shopfronts are all located in Melbourne, Trunk Shows allow them to reach their interstate customers on a personal basis. These Trunk Shows, which are held each season, consist of operating for four days including a weekend, where the whole current collection is brought up in all sizes, small to plus size, with the facility to try on the garments and take them home on the day, all while being looked after by a professional team.
“We get to spend four days with our customers and the feedback we get is ‘don’t stop doing this’,” Charlie says. This will be Digbys’ first trunk show in Canberra and comes as more and more Canberra customers have called for it upon visiting the Melbourne boutiques, so the team is excited to be able to offer them the same service without the travel.
“I feel that in Canberra there would be a lot of ladies seeking what we offer. We’ve always designed our garments for the customer, and it will work well for the demographic.”
