A happy home doesn’t need to be tethered to land. We grab our coats, ceramic…
Spring is the time of year we declutter our homes, get out into the garden and start thinking about all those jobs that need doing around the house.
For many of us, one of those jobs is likely to be showing our outdoor timber some TLC. Timber is a great way to add value to our properties and warmth to outdoor spaces but it does need care and attention to keep it in top shape.
We asked Rachel Hetenyi from Paint Place Mitchell and Fyshwick says that outdoor timber should be the hero of our outdoor spaces, but without regular care and maintenance, it can become a bit of an eye sore.
“Timber can become damaged when it’s not properly protected so it’s important to thoroughly clean and stain outdoor timber at least once a year.”
While the thought of bringing old timber back to life can seem like a really hard job, Rachel promises there’s an easy way to do it.
“Absolutely! It’s an easy three step project that any of us can do ourselves.
- Firstly, it’s a good idea to visit your nearest Paint Place store to get the best advice, products and accessories for the project.
- Depending on the type of timber you have, the condition that it’s in and the look you want to achieve, will determine the best products and techniques to use. We have everything to make your project easy.
- Once you’ve got the materials you need, you’ll just need to prepare the timber. Generally this involves scrubbing your deck with one of our timber cleaning products to remove all the dirt and oily residues. This preparation step gives you the perfect base to work from and is the secret to getting the best results.
- Finally, you need to apply your decking oil. Often one coat will be enough but if your timber has been neglected, you may need to reapply a second coat.
“Then it’s a matter of sitting back, relaxing and admiring your handy work!” she says.
While Rachel makes it sound easy, from experience decking oil can be hard to work with.
“It sounds like you may have used an oil-based decking product,” she says. “While these are great, and we stock a selection of them, it’s generally easier to work with a water-based product – technology has come a long way and there are many different products on the market to use as an alternative to a traditional decking oil.
“A new product we have that can also make applying either type of decking oil easier is our Wagner Deck Mate. You just need to pour your coating into the container in the handle so there’s no need to mess about with paint trays. Many of our customers have said this tool really is a mate because it makes the job so easy,” jokes Rachel.
