Step inside Canberra’s 2019 House of the Year

There are people who spend their lives dreaming about their perfect home–and there is a family-run building company in Canberra who are making those dreams a reality for their clients.

When you imagine your dream house what do you picture? Spectacular views of your home city? A pool that would give any resort a run for its money? A house for all ages and all occasions?

Well, Master Builder ACT’s House of the Year is all of the above and more.

The multi-generational home was built by Classic Constructions and designed by TT Architecture. And when you take a sneak peek inside the six-bedroom, six-bathroom property, it’s easy to see why.

Director of Classic Constructions Jason Tanchevski says the company worked with the clients over five years to create the home, from early in the design process right through to completion.

“It was the sort of thing that we worked on together with the Architect and the client, to narrow down what would work for them. They wanted something that was flexible and would evolve with the changing needs of their family,” says Jason.

The single-level residence is divided into pavilions linked around the grand feature of the house–a resort-style 25-metre in-ground pool.

The pool has a swim-up bar, an integrated spa, is self-cleaning and has a retractable automatic pool cover.

The central courtyard features a resort-style pool.

“It’s one of my favourite features of the house because it’s unique–everything is designed around that central entertaining area and many of the windows face towards that pool area,” says Jason.

The focal point of the house is a 25-metre in-ground pool.

The property also features resort-style inclusions such as a luxury cabana with an inbuilt bar and kitchen, two built-in saunas, private gym, tennis court and home theatre snug room.

Another of Jason’s favourite features is the so-called ‘man cave’ section of the house, which includes a wine cellar, pool room and custom joinery with built-in beer taps.

“It connects to a private gym area and is designed and built using pretty unique materials–including black steel benchtops and recycled timber all the way through,” he says.

This house is an entertainer’s delight, featuring several zones to host friends and family in Canberra’s seasonal climates. The pavilion-style set up of the home also provides a practical domestic setting that suits their unique family requirements.

“Each area of the home is segregated into separate sections without losing a feeling of connection. You’ve got your entertaining spaces, separate living quarters, a master retreat area, a kids’ wing with their own bedrooms, living space, kitchen and study space–so that each part of the home can be used for multiple activities,” says Jason.

The home has been custom-designed for its location–taking advantage of the solar orientation with very high sustainability credentials.

The design and building materials blend into the beautiful semi-rural landscape, including recycled Blackbutt timber, Brindabella bluestone, rendered brickwork, basalt tiling, polished concrete floors, custom joinery and expansive glass windows to take in the vast blue vistas of the Brindabellas.

For Jason, this house is a perfect showcase of the quality ‘dream homes’ that Classic Constructions can achieve. And, while the company continues to build award-winning homes in the capital, designing, crafting and building quality custom homes that their clients will love is their key ambition.

“By focusing on our philosophy to achieve the best possible outcome for our clients, the awards just seem to fall into place,” says Jason.

This philosophy was established three decades ago when Jason’s father Michael and his Uncle George founded the business. Today, Classic Constructions is run by Jason and his cousin Jon (George’s son), who remain steadfast to the tradition of creating quality homes.

“Mick and George built a culture that focuses on quality work, treating everything like it’s your own with a deep respect for the client, the project, the team and in everything we do. That mindset continues to drive everything we do,” says Jason.

For Jason, the most rewarding part of the job is the smiling faces on the clients when he gets to hand over the keys to their Classic Constructions home.

“We get clients that are so excited about seeing their dreams brought to life, that they shed tears of joy – there’s nothing more rewarding than that.”
