It’s a well known fact: cars need TLC to operate at their best. Regular servicing, a little oil and water, some air in the tyres and you’re set for happy travels. Humans aren’t that dissimilar, but our body treatments seem to always come complete with flowery language, dim lighting and pan pipes.

Not anymore.

Walking into Belconnen’s Wax Monkey feels a little like you’re headed for your own tune up – it’s a mechanic’s workshop for the body. Industrial chic at its finest, the exposed ceiling, cranking tunes and lots of metal surfaces isn’t what you’d expect to find in an average waxing salon. But that’s because Wax Monkey is anything but average.

We’re talking a 1950s retro ‘grease monkey’ feel – pops of red, black, white and deep navy in a raw and open space. It’s all very funky and quirky – and why not bring a sense of play to your ‘services’?

Because that’s how they’re billed – minor, major and routine services for girls and guys, as well as ‘safety inspections’ – with the salon’s nine rooms each dedicated to tuning your engine to perfection. Named after 50’s pin up girls – you might want to book Greta’s room or maybe Ginger’s – there’s plenty of eye candy to keep you entertained while you’re being worked on.

There’s been a real trend towards specialist salons in recent years – places that do a small selection of services very, very well rather than being generalists. And a waxing salon like Wax Monkey is a great example of why…rather than trusting your body (and, let’s be honest, your ‘bits’) to someone who might do an occasional wax, you’re in the hands of someone who does them every single day. Lots of them.

Let’s be frank. Waxing is not a particularly pleasurable experience…so when a Brazilian can be all sorted in 20 minutes rather than an hour? I’m so there. But this kind of efficiency can only come with experience – and they don’t come more experienced than Jacqui Mortensen. With over 14 years experience in the industry, previously owning a string of waxing salons in both Melbourne and Canberra, Jacqui is well known as one of the best waxers in town.
