They had us a Sake Samurai: five reasons to say hai to this Canberra sake celebration

Posted on

Canberra Kanpai & Canapés debuts at Manning Clark Hall on Saturday 18 October, bringing more than 100 of Japan’s most celebrated sakes and fruit liqueurs to the capital.

This October, Canberrans will experience an authentic Japanese sake celebration that’s never graced our city before. This isn’t your ordinary tasting event; it’s a three-hour cultural immersion that promises to transform how you think about this ancient Japanese art.

Here’s why it’s shaping up as one of spring’s most exciting events.

Premium drops you won’t find anywhere else

We’re talking about sake that’s been carefully curated by sake masters and recognised Sake Samurai – not your average bottle shop selection. Each pour tells a story of centuries-old brewing traditions, regional terroir, and masterful craftsmanship.

Whether you’re completely new to sake or consider yourself a connoisseur, you’ll discover flavours and styles that will surprise you. Selected bottles will even be available for delivery, letting you continue the journey at home.

Cultural immersion that goes beyond the glass

It’s not just about drinking – though that’s certainly enjoyable. Intimate Sake 101 seminars will demystify everything from brewing techniques to proper tasting etiquette. A lively Sake Quiz Rally adds a playful competitive element with prizes to win, while interactive description boards let you explore at your own pace.

Food that elevates the experience

Japanese-inspired canapés flow continuously throughout your session, each designed to complement the sake selection.

Get ready for bites that enhance rather than compete with the delicate sake flavours – think: Smoked Cream Cheese & Takuan Canapé, Grilled Cauliflower with Miso Sauce, Prawn Toast with Sesame Crust, and Yuzu Gel with Amazake Cream. Oishii!

A beautiful keepsake to take home

Every ticket includes a handcrafted artisan ochoko – the traditional ceramic cup used for sake service – beautiful, functional pieces that will remind you of your experience long after the last drop is savoured.

Three sessions to suit your Saturday

Get a head start on your weekend at the morning session (11 am – 2:00 pm), or bridge lunch and dinner at the afternoon slot (2:30 pm – 5:30 pm). Or perhaps head along to the evening session (6:00 pm – 9:00 pm) to shake up your typical Saturday night.

Each three-hour session provides the same premium experience – unlimited tastings, continuous canapé service, cultural activities, and that treasured ochoko to take home.

We’ll drink to that!
