Kick off your Sunday shoes – Footloose: The Musical is coming to Canberra

Get ready to cut loose, because the 80s phenomenon Footloose: The Musical is dancing its way into Canberra from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 May.
When it was announced that Footloose: The Musical had sold out its Melbourne run and hoped to someday tour nationally, fans of the feel-good fancy footwork featured in the movie all collectively quoted leading lady Ariel Moore.
“What’s this someday shit?”
Now – after holding out for a hero to make their dreams come true – the time has come for Footloose fans everywhere, following the announcement that the official, fully remastered production is on tour. Its third stop following Adelaide and Brisbane? Canberra.
That’s right, this is our time to dance.
Coming to the Royal Theatre at the National Convention Centre from Friday 8 until Sunday 10 May for a limited run, Footloose: The Musical will be transforming the venue into the fictional town of Bomont.
The musical follows the same plotline as the iconic 1984 film, seeing Ren McCormack fight to bring music and joy back to a small town where dancing has been banned.
Complete with throwback costumes, huge dance numbers and a soundtrack that will have you tapping your toes long after the show is over (including Almost Paradise and Let’s Hear It For The Boy), the vibrant production is an important reminder of why music, movement and self-expression matters.
And it promises to be a good time.
Featuring an all-Australian cast, including Gabriel Tiller (Jersey Boys, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Brittany Morton (Guys and Dolls, Love Actually: The Musical Parody) and Stephen Hirst (Pride and Prejudice, Little Shop of Horrors), it’s perfect for fans of the movie.
But even if you’ve never seen Kevin Bacon dance frantically in a warehouse to release frustration, anyone looking for a feel-good show all about youth, freedom and the power of standing up for what you believe in will enjoy this party.
