Christmas In The City 2016: Sausage dogs and dessert markets

Calum Stenning

Last year, Christmas in the City made headlines around the world by not only holding a cracking series of events, but by setting a Guinness World Record.

This Christmas, event organisers are looking to bring the heat from 16-24 December, with even more food, fun and festivities than last year happening around City Walk and Garema Place. Here’s our guide to what’s going on.

Christmas In The City Concert

Set against the ever-impressive backdrop of the (record-shattering) Canberra Christmas Tree, this year’s concert already has a lot of hype surrounding it, and with good reason. Runner up from the inaugural season of Australian Idol in 2003, Shannon Noll, is headlining. Let that sink in for a moment…#nollsie4eva.

Happening Friday 16 December.

Burgers, BBQ and Beer Markets

Just as the Germans take their sausages seriously at their Christmas markets, so do Canberrans take their burgers, BBQ and beer. With offerings from Grease Monkey, BBQ from Soul Cartel and a special edition Christmas beer from Bentspoke, this will be an unmissable event for those who favour food, froth and fun. You can vote via the Burgers, BBQ and Beer Markets Facebook page to name the Christmas brew – ‘Beer McBeer Face’ is currently leading over ‘Hoptimus Prime.’

Friday 16 and Saturday 17 December.

Sweet Tooth Dessert Markets

Loose Gourmet Churros

The world of sweet and baked goods is deep and wide, and that world will be your oyster this Christmas.

Everything from doughnuts and cronuts to fairy bread and churros will be available in a chose-your-own-adventure journey to Dessert City, plus amazing creations from local dessert designers such as Pip & Lou and Ricardo’s.

Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 December.

Street Food Markets

This year’s street food markets will see food from the world over brought to Civic Square – an incredibly easy day out to get behind. But for those needing a little prompting over the line, I have two words: Daschund (sausage dog) racing. Is there anything better than watching one of God’s least athletic creations dressed in a cowboy outfit, racing against others dressed as lifeguards, octopus and tanks (not a typo), and eating delicious food at the same time? I think not.

Sunday 18 and Monday 19 December.

Cocktails and Canapes Markets

As nice as a white Christmas market with gluhwein and bratwursts is, it’s also nice when it’s not 10 below zero and hot drinks are a necessity to stave off frostbite. Given that it will be good and warm in mid December, treat yourself to a Christmas mojito or pina colada and some delightful finger food, and spare a thought for those in cooler climes this Christmas.

Friday 23 December to Saturday 24 November.

Christmas Handcrafted Gifts and Arts Markets

Unless you’re part of that 1% that gets all their Christmas shopping done on time, the Christmas Handcrafted Gifts and Arts Markets will be a gift for you in itself.

Get all your Christmas shopping done, and support local makers and creators at the same time.

Friday 16 December to Saturday 24 December.
