Luke Chiswell's Art, fashion and fresh juice on the Foreshore

Fashion always seems to come with a side of something else these days – whether it’s live music (Fashfest) or food (Hustle and Scout/The Forage).

So when Canberra artist Luke Chiswell and owner of the Kingston Foreshore’s Local Press cafe Jonathon Draper decided to launch a new event together, it seemed only natural that it be a fusion of fashion, fresh juice and artwork.

“Art, fashion and fresh juice on the Foreshore”, will be held at the Local Press on October 9, featuring Luke’s new collection of women’s crop tops, underwear and popular men’s t-shirts, as well as large-scale paintings. Host of the evening, Local Press, will unveil their new menu of cold-pressed juices at the event.

Luke, who has just returned from a two month stint in New York, says his time in the U.S motivated him to “push the boundaries.”

“Just the whole US approach to doing things, of ‘aiming for the stars’, really inspired me to go bigger and better for my latest collection,” he says.

“My clothing collection is pretty simple; mostly black and white and made of cotton, aiming to be versatile and very comfortable. The women’s clothing is very playful.”

Playful indeed – the underwear features artwork of a strategically-placed beard; a recurring element throughout the clothing collection.

Luke says the designs for the collection are based on his last exhibition, ‘Straight Face’, an abstract representation of a man’s bestubbled face created with simple lines and negative space.

The inspiration for his latest collection – Straight Face – conceived from a daydream.

“It was just building on that style, as people seemed to respond to it really well,” he says.

The bush near Luke’s studio in Collector, helped provide the inspiration for his artwork collection.

“I would set up canvases within the bush, and just paint drawing my inspiration from the lines of the trees and just the way the Australian bush looks,” he says.

“Art, fashion and fresh juice on the Foreshore” will be held at The Local Press on October 9 from 6pm – 10pm. Entry is free. For more information on Luke Chiswell visit lukechiswell.com/

Went along to Hustle and Scout on the weekend and although was a little disappointed in the fashion, (not much different from the Handmade Markets I was extremely impressed by the Forage (food componenet). Would be great to have more of this type of thing during daylight savings around the lake. Nothing better than sitting around the lake on a warm summers night eating great vendor food and drink.
