Braddon’s most beautiful things
A job in IT is a lifetime away from running a shop, or making handcrafted timber boxes; but that’s the story of Belinda Burgess and Jochen Heinzmann, who have turned their backs on careers in technologies to embrace their creative sides.
Opening today in Braddon’s ORI building on Lonsdale Street, Timber & Tailor is the result of the husband-and-wife team’s combined passions for beautiful things. The store is a curated range of designers’ and makers’ products sourced largely from Australia, including homewares, jewellery, furniture, skincare, linen and more.
It’s a beautiful space inside a unique building. ORI’s origami-like entrance gives way to a moody, calm space which feels effortlessly high-end. Nestled near a hipster haven for gentlemen (Groomed) and a dessert-lover’s mecca (Frugii), Timber & Tailor is a showcase for Jochen’s talent for timber.
Speaking to Belinda and Jochen, it’s clear that this is a labour of love for them. Belinda has spent countless hours researching and sourcing products that she believes Canberrans will love – many of which have never been available here before. To educate buyers on the origin of the wares, Timber & Tailor have produced a number of ‘Designer Portraits’, to give the designers their due.
Consistent with the commitment to handmade, Jochen has put hours into fitting out the shop: from the superbly crafted wall cabinets with leather pulls, to the polished ply bearing the Timber & Tailor logo. A lot of love has gone into this space.
It’s clear that this is a business that appreciates beautiful things: from copper-edged timber stools, to necklaces of cord and copper; from carefully crafted marble-glazed ceramics to pendant lights made from limestone. And pride of place in the centre of the store, presenting the items to customers, are custom-made boyandgirlco timber plinths.
Everywhere you look, there is an item of beauty, so it must be incredibly hard to nominate a few favourites. But we asked Belinda and Jochen anyway. Here are their picks…
Our favourite things
Ugmonk (everything)
Jochen loves Ugmonk’s work – from Jeff Sheldon’s minimalist graphic tees to his Waxed Canvas Messenger Bags. Their philosophy is to design fresh high-quality unique items, and they succeed.
boyandgirlco plinths and bed
boyandgirlco do amazing things with wooden pallets. There’s something so ‘touchable’ about raw timber, and boyandgirlco show how well it works in everything from furniture to light fittings. The centrepiece of the Timber & Tailor store is their bed and plinths – they are simply gorgeous.
Two Sourced jewellery’s Industria necklaces
A collaboration between two Melbourne friends, Two Sourced draws inspiration from modern architecture and raw materials. Lola and Emily explore a minimal approach to accessorising with their jewellery pieces combining rope and metal.
Treehorn Design’s Oh Buoy lamp
This lamp is too cool. I need one. Handmade with new and reclaimed materials, the lamp’s base is curved so it always sits on an angle, the colour choice of cord and base is yours. It bobs around like a boat on the sea – the perfect talking point for your place!
Milly Dent’s Marbled Gem Cup
These blue and white Marbled Porcelain cups are angular on the outside; a matte, stone-like exterior feeling fabulous in the hand. Look inside and you’ll find a gloss glaze interior that looks like inky swirls. Each cup is unique and covetable.
