Hockey

Hockey is a sport in which two teams play against each other by trying to hit a ball or puck into the opponent’s goal using a hockey stick.

Field hockey, called simply hockey, is played by two 11-player teams on a grass field. A match is officiated by two umpires and consists of two 35 minute halves and a 5 minute half-time break. The aim of the game is to score more goals than the opposition.

Unlike other sports, only the goal keeper may touch the ball with their body during play. All other players can only use the flat side of their sticks to hit or dribble the ball down the field. Players also cannot shield the ball with their body or stick, or play the ball in a potentially dangerous way. A goal is score when an attacking player hits the ball into the goal from within the striking circle.

Indoor field hockey is a variation of hockey, with only five players a side and a reduced amount field space. Players cannot raise the ball unless shooting, they must push the ball to transfer it instead of hitting, and solid barriers line the sides which the ball can rebound off.
