Six warm fragrance picks for stormy winter days.
Scent has a way of stirring emotions and evoking memories. One spritz of the right fragrance can change your mood and set a new tone for the day. In my opinion, winter is the perfect season to wear a deep, warm perfume that leaves you feeling cosy despite the harsh climate.
Here are five of my top fragrance picks to carry you through the Canberra cold and transport you to scenes of snug libraries, romantic encounters and crackling fireplaces.
Byredo ‘Bibliotheque’

The scene: It’s raining outside. You’re curled up in a leather armchair in the corner of an oak-panelled library, reading your favourite book and blocking out the rest of the world.
The notes: Sweet notes of peach and deep plum interplay with floral violet and peony which are softened by musk and dry down to reveal a cocooning base of leather, vanilla and patchouli.

The scene: Leather jacket, knee-high boots, a red lip and a dose of confidence. This fragrance delves into the animalistic scent of leather and its luxe, supple qualities to create a bold statement.
The notes: Saffron, raspberry, thyme, olibanum and night blooming jasmine settle to a heavy and sophisticated base of black suede and amber wood.

Bastide ‘Ambre Marquis’

The scene: Cool nights in southern France. The sun begins to set and a breeze washes over the party. Guests drink red wine and chatter about on the candlelit terrace. This fragrance is inspired by the idea of two individuals being drawn to each other in the crowd, sitting across a table as they explore their connection and the delicate line between strangers and lovers.
The notes: Woody and oriental. Top notes of tangerine and elemi dry down to a seductive base of sandalwood, labdanum and patchouli.

Jo Malone ‘Velvet Rose and Oud’

The scene: A romantic dinner for two. The diners enjoy dessert as a bunch of red roses is placed in the middle of the table, and soft music plays in the background. The magnetic attraction between the lovers and the romance of the occasion is captured in this rich scent.
The notes: Dominating damask rose is wrapped in a smoky oud wood, which brings a comforting and a warming quality. Clove adds interest through its spicy profile, and praline contributes an element of sweet decadence.

Maison Margiela, ‘By the Fireplace’

The scene: A snowy cabin on a stormy winter night with a fireplace simmering inside. This simple scene is encapsulated in this heavily textured, atmospheric fragrance.
The notes: Cool top notes of pink pepper and orange flower petals carry through until the warmer heart of the fragrance is revealed. Clove oil, chestnut accord, gaïac wood oil, cade oil, vanilla accord, Peru balsam and cashmeran embody the comforting glow and quintessential scent of a fireplace.
