A ‘life changing’ breakfast with a difference

Posted on

It’s a breakfast with a side of life changing.

On Friday 2 November, the University of Canberra (UC) will host a Women’s Celebration Breakfast at Pialligo Estate, and it’s by no means your average brekkie.

There’ll be networking, picturesque views and a rare chance to listen to some of the university’s most successful alumni—but the “life changing” part happens when you purchase the tickets. One hundred per cent of all ticket sales will raise money for the UC cancer research fund, supporting ground-breaking research to improve treatments and survival rates for metastatic breast cancer, lung cancer and melanoma.

The popular annual event, now in its third year, is known to sell out quickly and this year is expected to be no different with a diverse speaker line-up including gender equality advocate Dr Skye Saunders, leading cancer researcher Professor Sudha Rao, PR and corporate communications expert Siobhan Rennie and health coaches The Merrymaker Sisters.

The morning will also include raffles, lucky door prizes, child-minding services for kids up to 12 years old and of course, a delicious English-style breakfast whipped up by Pialligo Estate.

Acting UC Alumni Relations Manager Caitlin Judd says the event is all about supporting women for a great cause.

“The speakers are inspiring women who have been trailblazing through their careers,” Caitlin says.

“It will be a really diverse set of talks, with Sudha and Skye being able to give us some really interesting insights on their research, and Siobhan who has previously worked for the likes of CEO’s and Prime Ministers, founded a successful blog, MeOhMy Mum and most recently is exceeding in the communications field. You will leave this breakfast feeling inspired, empowered and ready to take on the world.

“The Merrymaker Sisters will provide plenty of light and energy, which you need first thing in the morning!

“We also try and pair guests up at these events, so they have the chance to network and be around like-minded women. Men are of course welcome to join us too and support women, and we’ve had quite a few men attend in past years.”

With metastatic breast cancer one of the leading causes of death from cancer in women, Caitlin says there’s never been a better time to get behind the event’s cause. The research is ground-breaking, it’s improving patient care and it’s happening here in the ACT.

“Cancer is something that everyone has a connection to, whether you know someone who is affected, or you are affected, it’s a cause that is close to the hearts of many,” she says.

“We don’t take any admin fees from our ticket sales or donations, so every cent goes towards cancer research.

“It’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate women and also help them support a good cause.”
