Ginninderry and Strathnairn Arts spring to life at Springfest

With art exhibitions, markets, food stalls and entertainment, Canberra’s newest suburban frontier will spring to life on Sunday 28 October.
Springfest will celebrate the emerging Ginninderry community, located on Belconnen’s western fringe of Canberra.
Designed to cater to Canberra’s needs as a growing city, the Ginninderry community will eventually contain 11,500 homes within four new suburbs, of which 6,500 homes will be built on the ACT side.
Springfest was launched last year as a collaboration with the Strathnairn Arts Association Open Day, and the inaugural event was a “huge success” according to event organiser Susan Davis.

“It’s part of our strategy of connecting with the surrounding community, so when they move in there’s already a vibrant and active hub for new residents to plug into,” Susan says.
“Some of our future residents have been attending our festivals and other activities and they love that The Link and Strathnairn Arts – both with so much to offer – will be within easy walking distance of their new homes.”
There will be something for everyone on the day, with five exhibitions showcasing work from the Strathnairn Arts Association, earth-friendly markets, local musicians, food vendors and a kid’s art space in the Village Hall at Strathnairn Arts.

“Members of AFL club the West Belconnen Magpies will come along for some ball games for those interested in AFL, and there will also be historic dress ups for the kids so they can see how they dressed in the pioneer days,” says Susan.
“Other activities include clay wheel throwing demonstrations at Strathnairn’s ceramic studio, face painting and a puppet show, which proved very popular with the kids last year.”
Foodies will be spoilt for choice with offerings including Indian street food from Tikka Stand, Japanese-inspired food by Tanemaki Designs (think twist donuts and unique burgers) and coffee from ShotClock Espresso.

The markets will feature plenty of goodies from local makers, from sustainable fashion by Every Thread Counts, kidswear and accessories by Trove, native Australian food by Bent Shed Produce, and jewellery by Eryka Garbutt Designs.
“This is the perfect introduction to the Ginninderry community and what it has to offer,” Susan says.
