ACTIVE Neighbourhood: Inner North

The Inner North. The lentil belt. The home of endless bike paths, leafy suburban enclaves and more artisanal coffee joints than you can poke a stick at.

Encompassing some of Canberra’s most established suburbs, Canberra’s Inner North boasts a melting pot of fitness options, reflecting its diverse population. From mixed netball to mindful yoga, here’s where to break a sweat in the Inner North.

CLUB LIME BRADDON

Located on Braddon’s beloved Lonsdale Street, Club Lime Braddon allows you to work out in the heart of one of our city’s most stylish (and delicious) precincts. With group fitness, cardio, free weights, strength equipment, personal training and shower facilities, the location is perfect for city workers wanting to fit in a cheeky workout between work and dinner or go straight to the office after a morning session.

Need another reason? The club offers free 30-45-minute HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) group sessions up to three times a day, every day.

NATIONAL HOCKEY CENTRE

What can’t you do at Lyneham’s National Hockey Centre? To start with the obvious, this expansive centre serves as the base of the wildly popular Hockey ACT, with both indoor and outdoor fields.

If hockey isn’t your thing, why not pay a visit to Evolve – strength, movement and performance gym, which offers small group training sessions in a supportive and inclusive environment? Or, if you’re looking for a quieter way to work out, you can perfect your downward dog in the Wellness Empowerment Collective’s yoga classes.

NETBALL ACT

Netball is certainly a ‘thing’ in the ACT, with multiple social competitions run by Netball ACT across both winter and summer. With both all-female, all-male and mixed social competitions as well as state and Australia-wide league teams, you can revisit your favourite childhood sport any time of the year.

Got a flexible timetable? There is also a Ladies Morning Competition and lunchtime competition options available, depending on interest.

TENNIS ACT

Tennis. The sport of long summer days and epic championships. If you’ve been inspired by Djoko and Fed at the Australian Open to take up the racquet once more (or perhaps for the first time ever), Tennis ACT has a plethora of programs from beginners to elite sportspeople to help you make your tennis practice a grand slam.

Looking to pick up the pace? Tennis ACT’s Fitbit Cardio Tennis is a mixture of cardio workouts and tennis drills which will ensure you push yourself every session. Short on time? Fast4 Tennis is a speedy way to make the most of your time on the court.
