Damon Gameau brings his latest world-changing documentary to Dendy

Posted on

That Sugar Film director Damon Gameau is on a mission to revolutionise the way we see climate change with his new project, 2040.

Framed as a letter to his young daughter, who will be 25-years-old and experiencing the very real effects of climate change in 2040, the film aims to cut through the panic and doom that many of us feel when faced with the dire future of the earth. Instead, Damon explores what we could achieve if we took action right now.

“I think there’s room for a different story, a story that focusses on the solution to some of these problems,” he says in the trailer. “So in 2040, what would the world look like for our daughter if we just embraced the best that already exists? We have everything we need right now to make it happen.”

Travelling around the world, he explores the possibilities of electric self-driving cars in Singapore, a decentralised solar electricity grid in Bangladesh and a marine permaculture system that captures carbon and counters ocean acidification off the U.S. East Coast. 2040 is less a road map of solutions and more an inspirational, exciting call to action.

Using CGI effects and plenty of enthusiasm, the facts and figures of the climate change threat are broken down into ideas that the average viewer can understand. 2040 is aimed at both kids and adults, urging us to make a change before it’s too late for future generations.

2040 weaves Damon’s personal journey as a father in with the bigger picture, highlighting the fact that climate change is already affecting our lives in tangible ways. Fans of That Sugar Film can expect the same charisma and out-of-the-box thinking in 2040 that made his previous project an overnight success.

Through this ground-breaking documentary, Damon Gameau asks the question: ‘What’s your 2040?’ On 13 May, Canberra audiences have a chance to discuss their ideas with the filmmaker himself in a special Q&A screening.
