Hello, nostalgia: Paddle boats back on Lake Burley Griffin

Posted on

This weekend, Lake Burley Griffin will boast a new fleet of watercraft. That’s right—paddle boats are back!

Many Canberrans will have fond memories of peddling out onto Lake Burley Griffin on one of lake’s iconic paddle boats, but the colourful fleet hasn’t been seen for some time after operations ceased a few years ago. However, that’s all about to change.

This weekend, paddle boats will once more be seen on the lake—and you can rent one now.

Capital Paddle has been launched by Nick Tyrrell, founder of GoBoat Canberra, who says that it was a natural choice to bring paddle boats back to the lake.

“When I saw the National Capital Authority (NCA) looking for an operator to bring the paddle boats back to life, it seemed like a great opportunity to put all the things we’ve learned in the last two years of GoBoat into an exciting new addition to the lake,” says Nick.

“It was really rewarding that the NCA seemed to view us as an experienced and capable operator, that we already deliver a high standard of safety and service, and we’ll bring the same to the paddle boats.”

It may seem strange that Canberra biggest provider of recreational watercraft is opening what might seem like a rival business, but Nick assures me there’s room for both on the water.

“GoBoat has been so strongly welcomed by Canberrans, it really blew our socks off. We still get people calling up about paddle boats though, because they were here in Canberra for so long and were so popular, so I think there’s absolutely a market for both. When your legs are tired and you want an electric push around the lake in a picnic boat, there’s still GoBoat to go for!”

Nick also adds that they offer completely different experiences of the lake—especially when it comes to spur-of-the-moment outings.

“The paddle boats are just very different to the GoBoats. People do plan out their GoBoat experience a bit more because it’s really social, and people do it with a bunch of friends or family.”

“With the paddle boats, it can be a bit more impulsive, you won’t have to book in advance, but you might have to wait in line if it’s a busy day. We’re introducing shade canopies to our GoBoats this summer too, so I think people who want a more relaxed experience will still do that.”

Here’s everything you need to know.

WHERE CAN I FIND THEM?

NOT where the old paddle boat shed used to be, on Acton Peninsula.

Instead, Capital Paddle will operate from the Regatta Point Jetty, along RG Menzies Walk, just down the hill from the Visitor Info Centre at Regatta Point.

Best parking will be anywhere you’d park for Floriade—think Barrine Drive, Acton Peninsula, Regatta Point and even across the footbridge from Commonwealth Park (near Civic Pool).

HOW MUCH TO RENT?

The paddle boats will cost $20 per boat for 30 minutes, but you can rent for one hour for $30.

“It’s a really good leg workout though,” adds Nick. “So I think most people will think 30 minutes is enough!”

HOW MANY PEOPLE DO THEY TAKE?

“The paddle boats can fit two people each, and that’s really the maximum,” says Nick.

“There’s a spot behind the seats to put handbags or other valuables, and I don’t think it will take long before someone brings their dog along too.”

WHEN WILL THEY BE OPERATING?

They’ll be open every day during summer except Christmas Day from 10 am on weekends and 11 am weekdays—weather dependent.

Keep an eye on their Facebook or Instagram or send an email to hello@capitalpaddle.com.au.

CAN I BOOK IN ADVANCE?

While no pre-bookings are available, Nick encourages groups to email ahead with group booking requests (six or more boats) and they’ll do their best to find a solution.

WHAT ARE THE AGE RESTRICTIONS?

“All life jackets are included, even for little kids,” says Nick. “We don’t have an age restriction as such, but kids under 12 do need to be accompanied by an adult.”

CAN I BUY A GIFT CARD?

You sure can, via the website.
