Feeling a bit sniffly? Our tips for surviving flu season in Canberra

Posted on

It’s that time of year. Cold and flu season is already in full swing in Canberra and with winter looming on the horizon, it looks like it’s just the beginning.

But that doesn’t mean you have to ‘soldier on’ through a stuffy nose and sore throat. In fact, with flu symptoms likely to stick around for up to 10 days, the only way to truly get better – and not become victim to a constant cycle of sickness – is to rest.

That’s right, no morning Pilates classes or run clubs. We’re talking genuine rest where you skip anything that is likely to put a strain on your body, mentally and physically.

So, to help inspire you to kick your feet up to either beat or treat a cold (because prevention is always better than a cure), here are our tips for surviving flu season in Canberra.

Consider this a reminder to book in for your annual flu shot!

Boost those nutrients

A healthy diet results in a stronger immune system, so prioritising nutrients is extra important during flu season. But sometimes it’s hard to know what your body specifically needs to defend itself.

In this article, Nutritionist Kate Freeman looks at what our diet can do to assist our immune response. She even provides some helpful meal and snack ideas, so no brain power is required.

These 15-minute dinners are also worth bookmarking if you need some inspiration. Healthy, tasty, and fast, you can feed the whole family with minimal effort – perfect for when you’re feeling under the weather.

Drink plenty of fluids

It’s normal to lose your appetite when sick, but even if you’re eating less, you still need to keep hydrated. Tea is always a good idea when you have a sore throat (check out Waypoint Tea Co to support a local business), and soup also counts if you can’t stomach food but know you need some nutrients.

This pumpkin soup recipe is our personal favourite during the colder months. Not only is it delicious with the combination of coriander, orange and coconut cream, but you can also freeze it in preparation for future bouts of sickness.

Another great option is this recipe for Super Green Goodness Soup. Packed full of vegetables (including leek, potato, and whatever green veggies take your fancy), it’s nourishing and warming – the perfect cure for a cold.

Take some ‘me’ time

Along with aiming to get at least eight to ten hours of sleep at night, when you’re unwell (or feel on the brink), you need to listen to your body and take some time to slow down. Curl up with a book from a local author and let your body rest while you read or listen to your favourite podcast.

Need to move your body? A leisurely walk is a great way to get some fresh air. Here are some of Canberra’s prettiest walks to get your fix of autumn colour. Whatever you choose to do, just make sure it makes you feel good – before you know it, you’ll be feeling human again.
