Dami Im to play By The Water next month

We caught up with Australian pop sensation Dami Im ahead of her By The Water concert at the National Museum of Australia on 1 February.
I wait until the end of my conversation with Eurovision pop royalty Dami Im to ask, but I really can’t help myself. I need to know.
“You were obviously in the original Korean version of The Masked Singer,” I say tentatively. “But is there any chance you’d do it again for the Australian version?”
Dami laughs somewhat nervously. “It was really special being able to sing in Korea—and singing behind the mask was such a wild concept…I mean, never say never, but Dannii Minogue would guess it was me straight away!”
Okay. So, we won’t be seeing Dami emerge from under a mask this year. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t got plenty instore for her legion of fans (nicknamed the Dami Army) and everyone else who can’t seem to get her catchy pop tunes out of their head.
When we speak, Dami has just returned from visiting family overseas and is back in the studio, working on some special plans for 2020.
“I have a couple of really big announcements coming up really soon, so I’ve been preparing for that.”
She’s tight-lipped about what these might be, but we’ve already had a taste of what’s in store thanks to her recent release—Kiss You Anyway. Dami explains that this release isn’t an official single—it’s just something she wanted to put out there for the fun of it. Something to set the mood for 2020.
“I have lots of new music coming this year and Kiss You Anyway was just something that I had written that I was very proud of…I just wanted to drop it in time for the new year—to set the tone for what else is coming,” she explains, adding that “My fans can expect a lot more from me this year in that way.”
Canberra will also play a big role in the start of Dami’s year, with the National Museum of Australia selected as her first show of the new decade. Dami Im: By The Water will take place on the evening of Saturday 1 February on the Museum’s grassy lawns—a new format that Dami is excited to experience.
“It will change up the vibe—everybody can sit on the grass and bring their picnics. I think it’ll be a lot more relaxed. I’ll be bringing my band, so it’ll be a bit of fun.”
Guests are encouraged to make an evening of it, with fellow reality music star Caitlyn Shadbolt opening the show with her mix of melodic country, rock and pop.
With relaxed seating arrangements, guests can opt to bring their own picnic blankets and food or grab some tasty dinner options from one of the food vans, including Little Wu, Gorilla Dogs, Funky Brewster. There will also be a cash bar stocking local wines, beers and soft drink.
For those who would rather leave the cooking for someone else, picnic options— including an antipasto platter, family picnic and dessert option—can be pre-ordered and picked up on the night. Find the full menu here. Better yet, all packs come with biodegradable cutlery and packaging.
And, for those members of the Dami Army who may be in attendance, a VIP ticket option has been added, which gives you VIP pre-entry refreshments as well as a meet and greet with Dami before the show, including a photo and autograph.
For Dami, who toured here in 2016 and 2019, Canberra has always been synonymous with a warm reception. “I always get a great reaction from Canberra—I feel very welcome.”
As for what fans can expect to hear from her current discography—and whether we’ll get to see any of the fun covers she uploads to her Instagram—Dami is thoughtful.
“I love performing Super Love and Gladiator, but people seem to love me performing my new stuff, like Crying Underwater. I think that’s because it’s still new and has that raw connection with me.”
As for covers, Dami says, “People love it when I sing [Prince’s] Purple Rain, so I might just have to include that in my set.”
Note to self: If you see any masked singers performing Purple Rain…
