The Canberrans: Dr Sophie Lewis
Posted on
Dr Sophie Lewis is the ACT’s newly minted Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment. She was also the 2019 ACT Scientist of the Year.
Sophie previously worked in academia where she used climate models, observations and palaeoclimate records to provide a long-term perspective on recent climate change—and has a particular focus on how heatwave events in Australia are changing.
Her research has never been more relevant than this year.
In this episode of our podcast, The Canberrans, Sophie discusses her existential fears as bushfires gripped the country and smoke blanketed Canberra. Next minute it was wrecking balls of hail.
As the mother of a young daughter, Sophie and her wife considered how their child will navigate future climate change.
And yet, she is hopeful.
Canberra is a city which is doing many forward-thinking things. Sophie’s message is of the need for conversation, communication and commitment to climate change action, rather than panic and overwhelm.
