15+ new places to eat for Summer 2021

Posted on

‘Tis the season to be eating!

If you’re staying in town over the summer, here’s where to discover when it comes to new places to eat and drink. Not to mention—free air conditioning! Win/win!

 A NOTE ON OPENING HOURS

We can’t guarantee these places will be open over the Christmas break.

Best call ahead before you visit, check their socials or read our list of Summer Opening Hours here: hercanberra.com.au/food-drink/food-wine/where-to-eat-and-drink-in-canberra-over-christmas-and-summer-2020-21.

Please don’t get angry at us if they’re not open until the new year. It’s Christmas.

Espresso Room (Woden)

Caffiends on the Southside can top up on the good stuff once again with the opening of a new Espresso Room at Westfield Woden.

Now located upstairs between the two supermarkets in the fresh food precinct, the large open-air space brings a convenient hub to grab an ONA coffee and go.

Alternatively, a large forest green velvet-covered banquet, or upholstered armchairs provide a calming place to sit with friends over a brew.

Mr Papa (Fyshwick)

Mr Papa has been a staple for all Canberrans looking for delicious and quick Peruvian food from their iconic food trucks.

Well, drum roll please, because Mr Papa has a new home. Located on Fyshwick’s Barrier Street, Owner Carlos Ramirez says it’s a dream come true to give Canberrans another place to find their beloved chanchitos, asados and gringas.

Spilt Milk Bar (Dickson)

It’s only been a few hot weeks since Spilt Milk Bar opened on Cape Street in Dickson, but you only have to look at the lines to see that this Orange institution has been welcomed with open arms.

And it’s not hard to see why. Once inside Spilt Milk Bar’s industrial-chic stone-and-blonde wood interiors, it’s like the summer heat has been sucked away. The perfect temperature to ponder which scoop it’ll be today, whilst listening to Spilt Milk’s curated playlists.

Pattysmiths (Dickson)

Melbourne premium burger brand Pattysmiths has arrived in the capital. And if burgers are not your thing, perhaps some Alabama Chicken & Wings will keep you humming.

The brand preaches a gourmet alternative to the more traditional fast food burgers and offers fantastic alternatives for our halal friends such as a ‘faux bacon’ burger. A must-try.

Just in time for the Christmas social rush, LiloTang—one of Canberra’s favourite restaurants—has reopened with a stylish new fit-out while still offering the inventive and fun dishes that have made it a must-visit on the gastronomic map for locals and visitors alike.

Expect dishes such as pork and prawn potstickers with ginger and shallot; braised Wagyu beef brisket on a bao with lettuce and ssamjung. Delicious!

INKA (City)

While Canberrans may not be able to indulge in international culinary tourism any time soon, the world is being served up on a plate right here. INKA—set to hit Bunda Street in January 2021—is weaving the influence of Peru and Japan in Nikkei cuisine.

Follow their socials to make sure you’re at the dining table when they first start serving up.

Residents of Kingston are being particularly spoiled this year with the opening of the Eyre Street Market.

Wildflour Kingston’s flakey pastries, fresh bread and dark and moody interior are clearly a recipe for success as on a few occasions since opening they had to quickly bake a second round of goods as they flew out the door.

Wildflour is well worth spending your dough.

Grab your dancing shoes and order yourself an Espresso Martini because you have a big night ahead of you at One22 Bar.

Opening in the late Mr Wolf’s old location in the Sydney Building, this bar is here to prove that with an attention to good music and fantastic ambience, there is no such thing as going home early.

The journey till the sun goes up starting with funk, soul and jazz, transitioning from 11 pm into disco and as the birds start chirping, the house keeps playing.

Cucina Ristorante (Nicholls)

The people of Nicholls are a lucky bunch as they welcome Cucina Ristorante.

Serving up a variety of Italian favourites, including beetroot and ricotta ravioli and, of course, showstopping woodfired pizza, Cucina Ristorante is also offering a breakfast menu showcasing fresh ingredients.

Wear your stretchiest pants as you’ll be leaving with a full belly.

A big bowl of ramen hits the spot like nothing else and oh do we have some news for you Canberra. Belconnen is gaining another food delight as Ramen O opens their doors.

Owner and chef Shun has been working across the Japanese fine dining scene for over 20 years in Australia and Japan and is thrilled to open his first restaurant with wife Yuki.

They’re passionate about traditional Japanese food and hope that Ramen O offers a taste of Japan in a time where we can’t travel.

Southside Farmers Market favourite UNDER Bakery has some sweet new digs in Mawson. Baking up a storm of sweet treats and artisanal breads inspired by owner Lachlan Cuttings’ experiences living in Copenhagen, we recommend trying out their focaccia or the Swedish favourite bullar which is best described as a ‘sweet bread’.

Getting in early is advised, however, as they’ve proven popular amongst the locals and this is something you just don’t want to miss out on.

Two Peck Crispy Chicken (City)

All the way from Taiwan and now available in Canberra is Two Peck Fried Chicken. Serving up Taiwanese street food snacks and drinks such as their signature bubble tea or grass jelly honey tea, if you’re craving something a little bit cheeky, then Two Peck has you sorted.

Al Manoosh (Mawson)

Al Manoosh is bringing the flavours of Lebanon to Mawson Shops. Delivering delicious breakfast and baked goods, their menu favourites include shakshuka (middle eastern baked eggs), Zaatar labneh with fresh flat bread and their ‘Cheese’n’zaatar stacker (think gozleme), it’s well worth the visit for breakie.

When the cravings for authentic chinese food arise, look no further than the newly opened ‘Little Steamer’.

Located in the heart of the CBD on London Circuit, it’s the perfect place to swing past for a delicious meal before heading home after a long day.

The signature dishes include the Beijing roast duck pancakes and Shanghai pork dumplings (xiao long bao).

All hail the dumpling gods for gifting us Dumplings & Co. inside the Canberra Centre food court.

A self-described passion project that attempts to encapsulate the memories from the owners childhood sitting around their family table laughing and sharing stories whilst making dumplings, a lunchtime visit is in order when everyone returns to work in the new year.

‘Too cool for school’ is a phrase we would use to describe the newly opened Tokyo Canteen, serving up Japanese-style breakfast and brunch in the highly anticipated Eyre Street precinct in Old Kingston shops.

The menu showcases Japanese favourites including chicken katsu curry and okonomiyaki as well as some less-traditional but just as delicious items such as their ginza honey toast with matcha mascarpone and miso mushrooms on toast.
