Been dreaming of margarita-tasting paddles? Dream no longer, Fonda Mexican is open

Ready your tastebuds, the authentic taste fiesta that is Fonda Mexican is finally open.

Flinging the doors to their casa open (fun fact: in Mexico, a ‘fonda’ is a home that a family opens up to their local community as an unofficial restaurant), the much anticipated Fonda Mexican is finally coming to Canberra to carve out its own little slice of contemporary Mexican-influenced dining.

And from the moment we heard the words ‘margarita-tasting paddles’ we were sold.

Known for their fiery flavours, good times and (of course) guac, what makes this opening so thrilling from Chipotle Mac and Cheese croquettes to hefty roasted sweet potato burritos, cheesy pork carnitas or smoky chargrilled chicken Quesadillas, their dining offerings go beyond your basic crunchy taco shell—instead you’ll be able to enjoy authentic, home-made Mexican flavour (with the bonus of being a touch healthier than your normal Zambies order).

Taking your tastebuds on a journey south of the boarder, other menu highlights include crispy prawn tacos (prawns, chipotle aioli, guac, fresh pineapple salsa, agave and shredded cabbage), loaded nachos with all the toppings, churros, and more mouth-watering Mexican dishes then you can poke a stick at.

Add in a margarita-tasting paddle (because choosing between lime and chilli, chilli mango, watermelon and lime and coconut margaritas is all too hard), and we’ll be there with bells on.

Originally opening on Swan Street in Richmond, Victoria in 2010, Fonda quickly gained a cult following for deliciously fresh Mexican food. Now bringing the perfect combination of tacos and tequila to nine locations across Melbourne and Sydney, they don’t always play by the food rules (Brussel sprouts? On a taco? Weird, but it works), which is part of what makes this new foodie venue so appealing.

Get ready for abundant tort chips, guac and fantastic Mexican (a lot of which is, or can be made, gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian). We hope you’re hungry.
