If you’ve noticed lots of activity around Civic’s Sydney and Melbourne buildings, you’re not alone.
Construction is finished, the new and improved Verity and Odgers Lane are now completed and we’re very excited!
While we don’t know the exact businesses that will be opening their doors just yet, the revamped area has paved the way for new day and night-time activities. With renewed abilities for trading, restaurants, cafes, and events for the community to enjoy for decades to come, there will be something for everyone at Verity and Odgers Lane in no time.
The revitalisation of the areas is all part of the ACT Government City Renewal Authority’s effort to give a much-needed facelift to the Sydney and Melbourne buildings.
Designed as the city’s premier retailer block, the iconic Sydney and Melbourne buildings have become an iconic landmark to Canberra, framing the early character of Civic since their construction in 1946.
Recognising the importance these buildings hold for Canberra, the City Renewal Authority has worked to revitalise these landmarks, restoring the building’s character to its former glory.
ACT Chief Minister, Andrew Barr, stated that the refurbished lanes have improved Canberra’s City Centre. “The revitalisation project improved safety and connectivity for the much-loved historic Sydney and Melbourne buildings for years to come,” Mr Barr said.
Verity and Odgers Lane revitalisation not only structurally improved the spaces, yet have provided convenient, attractive, small-scale, spaces, to house brand-new eateries and events, breathing a new life into the area as a cultural centrepiece for Canberra.
Local business, Sideway, has already hosted a successful laneway event during the later stages of the upgrades.
“It’s a fantastic space that accommodates just what we’re after. The upgrade has brought new energy to the laneway and made it more accessible for people to be outside and enjoy,” said Sideway owner Tim Brown.
“We’re looking forward to holding more events and bringing people back to the area”.
The early success of the Verity and Odgers Lane upgrades shows a promising future for the revitalisation of the historically Iconic Sydney and Melbourne buildings, bringing these loved landmarks back to their former glory.
Be sure to watch this space flourish and see what yummy places will be opening next!
