10 things to eat and drink at the National Multicultural Festival

Posted on

Here’s how you can feast your way through the hundreds of food stalls at the National Multicultural Festival.

For anyone planning on attending the three-day festival, you might be wondering how you can taste your way around the globe as over 170 multicultural communities come together. Well, we’ve done the hard work for you and found 10 things to eat and drink that you need to add to your list.

Here’s a little taste (pun intended) of what you can expect. But remember, this is just the beginning. With hundreds of food stalls offering signature dishes from across the globe, you won’t leave this festival hungry!

Ambush Brewing

Kick off the festival with a delicious drop from this local Mitchell brewery.  All about celebrating Canberra with craft beers made from the freshest regional ingredients, featuring locally grown hops and wild hops.

Just a heads up – this stall will only be operating on Friday night in Ainslie Place. And with a top of 35 degrees predicted, we know you’ll be craving a cold drink…

Azadi-e Zan

Want to eat something good while doing some good? This stall will help raise funds to support Azadi-e Zan and their work in helping Afghan women’s rights defenders escape the Taliban.

Serving traditional vegetarian Afghan food and drinks including Bolani (Afghan flatbread), this stall also gives women in their network an opportunity to share their stories

Berlin Bangers

Award-winning Wurst? Don’t mind if we do. Berlin Bangers are bringing a taste of Germany to the Multi-Culti with handmade traditional smoked sausages.

Handmade by a German butcher with original German spices and smoked over German birch wood, the team at Berlin Bangers have won more than 60 medals, as well as the title of ‘Sydney’s best sausage’ at the Royal Easter Show. And in some mouthwatering news this year they’re also offering a vegan Bratwurst!

Crunchy K Stix

Crispy, golden potato sticks coated in Korean cheese…sound like your idea of heaven? On Friday night you can experience the crunch of authentic Korean street food at Crunchy K Stix.

Specialising in potato sticks that come with a variety of mouth-watering toppings, (including Korean cheese, chicken powder and mushroom sauce), they also have vegetarian and vegan options available – including Korean BBQ tofu sticks and spicy garlic potato sticks.

Frencheese

They had us at raclette. Serving this beloved dish from France, Switzerland, and Germany across all three days, at Frencheese you can enjoy melted raclette cheese poured over sautéed potatoes, cured meats, salad, and cornichons.

Serving it in an authentic chalet-inspired wooden stall and using cheeses imported directly from France, all the menu items are gluten-free and there’s also a vegetarian option available!

Jarochos

Because there’s nothing authentic Mexican food – especially when it’s locally made. While you can find normally Jarochos on Lonsdale Street in Braddon, there’s something special about eating one of his mouth-watering tacos in the middle of the MultiCulti.

Servings and nachos (with options for vegetarians and vegans), with fillings like homemade Mexican sausage and cactus grilled capsicum, your stomach will thank you.

Holy Roly

Have a sweet tooth? This is the stall for you. Serving up rolled ice cream mixed with fruit and toppings, and topped with your choice of syrup, biscuits, or candy, Holy Roly is serving up a traditional Thai dessert you need to try.

Make sure you also keep room for the Holy Roly roti bread, a popular pan-fried dessert in Thailand that’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Drizzled with sweetened condensed milk, you can choose more fillings including banana, Nutella, jam, cheese and more. Sugar rush, anyone?

Mr Papa Peruvian Street Food

It’s iconic for a reason. Since 2013, Mr Papa has been a proud, and popular, participant in the Multicultural Festival and it’s back for another year.

Wondering what’s on the menu? You can expect the best bites of Lima including the Pork Belly ‘Chanchito’, handmade empanadas, and a special Pisco Bar featuring Peru’s national drink in a variety of unique cocktails. Available exclusively at the festival, it’s the closest you’ll get to Peru without having to catch a plane.

Trust us when we say that this stall has some very nice buns…Super Bao is returning to the Multicultural Festival with their delicious gua bao.

Stuffed with tender pork belly, duck, fried chicken and more, one bite is all it takes to understand what the hype is about. They’ll also be selling Taiwanese popcorn chicken, which is always a hit for the whole family!
