NAIDOC week celebrated with sparkle

Posted on

As part of NAIDOC Week celebrations in Canberra, up-and-coming jewellery designer Thomas Coen Bonson will be unveiling his debut solo exhibition, Elegance in Heritage: First Nations Jewellery Unveiled, at ANCA Gallery in Dickson.

A proud Jawoyn and Kala Lagaw Ya man from the Northern Territory, Thomas has a passion for showcasing the stories, traditions, and beauty of his people and culture.

The exhibition presents a collection of handcrafted pieces that blends high-end jewellery with deep cultural storytelling, grounded in Thomas’s proud First Nations heritage. Each work explores legacy, identity, and artistry – reimagining heirloom design for a contemporary audience.

The opening night event, held on Saturday 5 July from 4:30 pm –6 pm, will bring together community, collectors, and art lovers for an evening of conversation, connection, and celebration. Guests will also have the chance to enter a giveaway to win a bespoke jewellery piece, crafted by Thomas after the exhibition.

“This show is deeply personal — it’s about honouring heritage while creating something entirely new,” says Thomas.

“I want people to feel the stories behind the work. Every piece holds meaning, history, and spirit.”

In 2024, Thomas was named a Rising Star by the Australian Jewellery Industry Awards, recognising his contribution to the Jewellery Industry and his vision to elevate Indigenous heritage through wearable art. His pieces range from ornate pieces featuring diamonds and precious stones, to more artistic interpretations of Indigenous culture, including minimalist Aboriginal Flag rings.

He said the rings serves as a symbol of support and a catalyst for conversations. When asked in an interview with Jewellery World whether he intends to develop an Indigenous-specific collection or have his pieces be worn by all, he emphasises the inclusive nature of his designs.

“The Coen Collection is inspired by my heritage and is to be inclusive for all people and cultures. I was raised in a culture that believes sharing information and love is the way to move forward. Having more understanding of the Indigenous culture within the wider communities will only help our mission even more. Awareness is essential for proper representation,” he says.

The exhibition is supported by artsACT and the exhibition is free.
