Cosy winter date ideas to heat up your love life

Running out of ideas? Whether it’s a girl’s night or a romantic evening you’re planning, we’ve got you covered.

There are so many options for date night that don’t just include a candle-lit dinner, even in Canberra. We’ve curated a list of nine cosy winter date ideas to skip that first-date awkwardness, celebrate an anniversary or catch up with your girlfriends.

Get creative

If you’re looking for something to break the ice and take you out of your comfort zone this winter, Instala DIY Studio in Braddon is the perfect date idea. With different workshops such as perfume, candle and jewellery making, the options are endless. Also in Braddon, Paint Pinot hosts paint and sip sessions. With wine, food and art, what else could you possibly need?

Go ice skating

As a classic winter activity, ice skating never fails for date night. Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre has a disco night every Friday, regular weekly public sessions to attend, and as an extra treat for uni students, Cheapskates Uni Night every Wednesday from 8 pm to 10 pm.

Get your chocolate fix

Max Brenner at the Canberra Centre or Oliver Brown on Bunda Street are the perfect way to end date night by sharing a fondue for two, or by curling up with a steaming hot chocolate. What better way to pretend it isn’t freezing outside?

Challenge yourself

Challenge yourself and test your compatibility with one of Canberra’s escape rooms. Escape Rooms Canberra in Phillip or Riddle Room Canberra in Mitchell have various immersive puzzle rooms to work your way through, each room with a different theme. These thrilling puzzle rooms are also the perfect activity to do with a group of friends.

Catch a movie

Canberra is full of great movie theatres such as Hoyts, Dendy and Palace Electric Cinemas. While sitting next to each other in silence might not be the best idea for a first date, all the hottest movies are out this winter, from Fantastic Four, to F1 the movie, to I Know What You Did Last Summer to Superman.

Visit Holey Moley and Hijinx Hotel

Holey Moley and Hijinx Hotel have everything you could ever need for a night out. They have different challenge rooms, karaoke and mini golf paired with delicious pizza and indulgent cocktails to keep you busy and refreshed all night.

P.S. Happy Hour is every day from 4 pm to 6 pm with food and drink specials.

Try a couples workout class

Get sweaty with one of Canberra’s many workout classes. Pilates is the hottest workout at the moment, with reformer studios all across Canberra. If you’re really wanting to turn up the heat and get your heart rate up, Love Athletica in Braddon has hot mat Pilates classes from 30 to 35 degrees. There are also a wide range of cycle and strength classes at gyms such as Next Gen, Gungahlin Leisure Centre, Fernwood Fitness, and more.

Cocktails and company

If you’re going for a classic dinner and drinks moment, there’s no shortage of cocktail bars in the city. Some personal favourites are The Howling Moon, Highball, The Pearl, Molly, Dolly’s, Luna, Paloma’s and many more.

Have a spa day

Refresh and rejuvenate that dry winter skin with a spa day. A couples massage at Hale Spa or relaxing in the sauna with your friends at Recovery Lab is the perfect remedy to the winter cold.

And if these aren’t what you’re looking for, there are plenty of facials and skin treatments to try around Canberra.
