Help shape the future of Gungahlin with this 15-minute survey

Posted on

Are you a northsider frustrated by the traffic along Horse Park Drive? Maybe you’re a southsider who doesn’t enjoy the trek along Gungahlin Drive? Well, here’s your chance to do something about it.

The Gungahlin Community Council is seeking input from all Canberra residents to help shape transport, healthcare facilities, and community amenities. As a Gungahlin resident myself, I know we’ve got plenty to say.

With Gungahlin set for a massive 54 per cent population increase and 74 per cent job growth by 2041, we’re not just talking about minor tweaks to our neighbourhood. We’re looking at decisions that will define what it’s like to live, work, and raise families here for decades to come.

“We have an incredible opportunity to help shape one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions,” says Henley Samuel, President of the Gungahlin Community Council.

“With resident voices, we can ensure the community’s vision is front and centre in every major planning decision.”

And the best part? This isn’t just another tick-box exercise. The survey directly feeds into major government studies and planning processes that are happening right now.

The early survey responses are painting a fascinating picture of what we all want for Gungahlin’s future. Here’s what’s catching our attention:

  • A whopping 87 per cent want more community consultation on major infrastructure projects (clearly, we all want our voices heard!)
  • 81 per cent are calling for targeted strategies to attract commercial businesses to our district
  • Three-quarters see those delayed infrastructure projects – yes, we’re looking at you, mystery cinema – as genuinely impacting our community’s vibrancy
  • 71 per cent prioritise expanded healthcare services, with many supporting proper hospital facilities

“These responses show residents have thoughtful, informed views about our district’s development,” Mr Samuel notes.

“The more voices we gather, the stronger our partnership with government and developers becomes.”

Whether you’ve just moved to one of those shiny new developments in the city centre, or you’ve been calling Gungahlin home since the early days in Palmerston, your perspective matters. New residents bring fresh eyes to our challenges, while long-term locals understand how the district has evolved and what’s worked well.

The survey closes on Sunday 31 August 2025, which means you’ve got just a few weeks left to have your say. In the time it takes to grab a coffee and scroll through social media, you could help shape infrastructure and development decisions that’ll benefit Gungahlin for decades.
