Five activities to make the most of Daylight Savings (even if you’re a bit tired from the early start)

Posted on
Today, a magical thing happened. I left work, and the sun was still out. It’s here, Daylight Saving Time is here!
We are ready to be how we like our eggs; sunny side up! Here’s how we are filling up on our yearly sunshine quota in the evening (without forgetting the sunscreen, of course), before transitioning back to the boring “regular” time.
Clubbing (the sporty kind)
Do you want to brush away the seasonal lethargy, resume your fitness journey, and return to civil society all at once? Then join a sports club! ACT Government’s Sport and Recreation registry supports a horde of social sports organisations. The best part? You don’t have to be at the top of the game; many of them are beginner-friendly (yay!). If a clumsy duck like me felt at home, then you have nothing to worry about.
Take your pick of a sports club and get moving!
Movie night? Try movie day with Sunset Cinema.
Movie nights are so passé, try movie days instead with Sunset Cinema. Set in the Australian National Botanic Gardens, lounge around on the lawns in the open by pre-hiring a bean bag, grabbing a lawn chair or simply BYO! With an array of food vendors to choose from, you can still bring your own food if you’d prefer. Best part? Even if no vendors serve fairy floss, you can count on the sky serving the classic Canberran fairy floss sunsets!
Put your sailor hat on
All aboard! Gather your trusty crew for a voyage into the known waters of Lake Burley Griffin. Hire a boat to drift across the city. Catch that aforementioned perfect cotton candy sunset while spotting iconic locations within the National Triangle to while away the evening. No boating experience? Fret not, as Love Boats and GoBoat offer self-drive electric boats for hire that even novices can steer.
Are you the outdoorsy type?
Now is the best time to make the most of restaurants with charming al fresco dining spaces, without being a victim of hypothermia or heatstroke. What better way to unwind than after-work drinks with your mates or a delectable dinner with your family while the sun still lights your way home? With so many options for you to choose from, we have rounded up a list of the Capital’s restaurants with outdoor seating areas for every occasion.
(De)tours of the lakes
We know it’s a cliche, but for a good reason. Canberra is basically synonymous with magnificent lakes, of which we have plenty. Why not make use of them? A little detour after work by Lake BG, Lake Tuggeranong or Lake Ginninderra to rejuvenate your spirit hurt nobody. Carry some cheese and crackers, indulge in a cool iced beverage, or devour a scoop (or two) of gelato . If the clear blue sky and the brisk breeze don’t levitate your leftover winter blues away, then you are doing it wrong.
