Eight spots to get your soup fix in Canberra

Posted on

There’s nothing like soul-soothing soup on a cold day in Canberra. Here are eight places to find some to warm you up from the inside out.

From Laska to classic sweet potato and coconut, this list covers a range of cuisines serving up soups. But the one thing they have in common? All the dishes listed are warming, hearty and healthy.

Read on for some soup-erb suggestions.

Editor’s note: Not all these dishes are available every day, with many venues offering them as specials only. Keep an eye out on their social media to see what they’re serving, pop in every so often, and remember, even if there’s no soup on the menu, there’s sure to be something else on the menu to warm you up!

Naadam (Phillip)

This authentic Mongolian restaurant has two soup offerings – one as an entrée and one as a main. The entrée is a ‘covered soup’, otherwise known as bitu shol and is a confit garlic and miso broth with sliced beef served in a steamed spinach dough cover.

The main is milk tea dumpling soup – and it’s well worth trying. A traditional, comforting dish, it’s warm, savoury, and packed with handmade beef dumplings and slow-cooked beef brisket.

The Pedlar (Campbell)

A classic pub serving elevated offerings, The Pedlar’s new seasonal menu includes the addition of sweet potato and coconut soup – perfect for warming up on a cold day. Made with makrut lime, ginger, cashew butter, it’s served with toasted sourdough and can be made gluten-free upon request.

The Knox Made in Watson (Watson)

A local hub for locals to relax and enjoy good food, the Knox has gained a reputation for serving up soups made with fresh and local produce when the weather turns. They often share specials on their Instagram, so keep an eye out to see what flavours you can expect next. Previous soups include creamy miso mushroom and spiced cauliflower!

Raijin (McKellar)

This suburban gem serves up traditional Japanese noodle soups, including chicken katsu, tempura and tonkotsu. And of course, it’s not a meal at a Japanese restaurant without adding a side of miso soup. Choose from plain or vegetarian and let it warm you from the inside out.

Pho Phu Quoc (Dickson)

You can’t talk about soups without mentioning Pho Phu Quoc – the home of some of Canberra’s most delicious Vietnamese dishes.

From their entrée soups (think: wonton, sweet corn and chicken and vegetables and bean curd), to Pho, Hủ Tiếu Soup and egg noodle soup, the menu is packed full of comforting options.

Dickson Asian Noodle House (Dickson)

Serving traditional Malaysian, Thai and Lao cuisine, Dickson Noodle House is a soup lover’s dream. Start with one of their entrée soups before digging into a laksa – a spicy noodle soup packed full of vegetables and your choice of protein.

Can’t decide between all the options? Go for the combination – a full flavoured curry and coconut broth served with wheat noodles and rice vermicelli, chicken, pork and duck and garnished with bean curd and vegetables.
