The Canberra hot chocolate crawl: where to find the cosiest cups

Posted on

It’s official: hot chocolate weather is here. When the weather starts to turn cold in Canberra, there’s only one solution: treat yourself to something hot, rich and slightly over the top in its indulgence.

While chains Oliver Brown, Max Brenner, Godiva and San Churro are always good choices for a hot chocolate fix, some of Canberra’s cosiest cups can be found in locally owned cafés.

Here’s our Canberra hot chocolate crawl.

Fox and Bow (Farrer and Red Hill)

The perfect treat on a cold day, Fox and Bow serves up thick, rich Spanish hot chocolate to warm you from the inside out. In one word? It’s exquisito.

Farmers Daughter (Yarralumla)

This gem in Yarralumla serves Belgian hot chocolates – perfect for when you’re craving a decadent drink on a cold day. Open seven days a week until 3 pm, don’t blame us if it becomes your winter ritual.

Urban Pantry (Griffith)

A favourite of Manuka locals, at Urban Pantry you can choose between five different Belgian hot chocolate options. Along with classic milk, dark and white chocolate, they also have Top Deck and Chocolate Overdose options – they’re just as sweet as they sound.

Double Shot (Deakin)

Double Shot is another venue with an abundance of hot chocolate options. Like Urban Pantry, here you can sip your way through milk, dark, white, Top Deck and Chocolate Overdose Belgian hot chocolates. The hardest part will be choosing which one!

Deakin & Me (Deakin)

With a high cocoa content and a rich flavour, the hot chocolates from Deakin & Me will be sure to hit the sweet spot. Serving Bates drinking chocolate made with 40 per cent cocoa, it’s best enjoyed while soaking in the sun in their outdoor courtyard.

Space Kitchen (Woden)

Home to the Nutella and Malteser hot chocolates, we would be remiss not to mention Space Kitchen. Also serving a classic milk hot chocolate, they all come topped with marshmallows – and honestly, can you name a better combination? Make sure to ask about the over-18 options as well. Thank us later.

Common Grounds (Gowrie)

Choose between a velvety traditional hot chocolate or a white hot chocolate at Common Grounds the next time your craving hits. It’s basically comfort in a cup.

Ricardo’s Café (Macquarie)

Nutella, mint, Malteser and salted caramel…hot chocolate drinkers have plenty to choose from at Ricardo’s. Open seven days a week, make sure to also try one of their beautiful cakes from the display cabinet.

Via Dolce (City)

Italian hot chocolate, anyone? You might know Via Dolce for its gelato bar, but this Italian all-day dining venue also serves some warming winter-y treats. Choose the Italian hot chocolate for something a little different, or treat yourself to a mug filled with milk, dark or white chocolate.

Murrumbateman Chocolate Co (Murrumbateman)

If you consider yourself something of a hot chocolate aficionado, a trip to this rural chocolate and ice-cream studio is well worth it. Bookings are required for their tasting experience, but with handcrafted chocolate, coffee, tea, chocolate drinks and a selection of cakes and sweet treats available, why wouldn’t you want to spend a day here?

Take some time to shop the handcrafted chocolate and make sure to pick up a hot chocolate stirrer (or three) to take home for later.
