Area 51 is bringing a huge new indoor adventure playground to Canberra (guaranteed no aliens)

Those counting down the days until other-worldly family entertainment destination Area 51 opens its doors are in for a treat with eight-metre drop slides, adults-only nights and so much more.
Since news broke in March that Area 51 – an indoor play centre operator known for unique all-ages experiences – would be opening an ACT flagship venue, parents and children alike have patiently been waiting to hear exactly what the 4977-square-metre property in Fyshwick will bring.
And while the venue is yet to announce an official opening date, we now know what you can expect.

“We’re building a 5000 square metre shed, which consists of climbing walls, high ropes, different soft plays – more of a family offering than the market currently has,” Area 51 Chief Operating Officer Michael Affleck says.
“We incorporate slides that are all over the UK and America – which Australia don’t have – so we built them. I’m talking eight-metre drop slides, whirlwinds, and half pipes…just a bit of everything really.”

With an estimated capacity of 360 people, the Canberra location will be bringing all the experiences that have made Area 51 Australia’s fastest-growing family entertainment destination. Before you ask, there will be no Snow World, but there will be something for literally all ages –including adults-only nights.
“The Canberra facility is all ages, so we can really incorporate family play together instead of limiting it to a certain age group,” says Michael.
“It’s all about bringing that inner child back out of you. We’re building an 18-plus night, so you get access to the entire playground and the entire site, but it’s about embracing that different kind of night out.”
Area 51 Canberra will also be home to a 300-seater café complete with a menu that includes breakfast and lunch options like burgers, pizzas, sides and shares, with dietary-friendly offerings available.

It’s also set to be open seven days a week from 9 am, with plans to stay open until 9 pm. And while it’s many more months until 2/16 Ipswich Street is transformed into an otherworldly escape, it looks like Canberrans can look forward to an exciting new hangout.
“I think we offer a step above most indoor entertainment centres,” says Michael.
“We’re a little bit unique, but we’re not afraid to try something that no one else has ever done to give everyone an experience they’ve never had before.”

Area 51 is set to open in December 2026 or January 2027. For more information, visit area51world.com.au or follow @area51world.au.
