Looking for the perfect formal outfit that doesn’t break the bank? Enter: Operation Formal Wear

From gathering darling dresses to snagging snappy suits, Operation Formal Wear is underway for its most overt operation yet.
There’s nothing like the excitement of formal season. From the thrill of helping your child hunt down the perfect dress or suit to the bittersweet feeling of waving goodbye as they head off to celebrate with their friends in style, for many families, it marks both an end and a beginning of an important chapter.
But as the 2026 season starts to sneak up upon us, many are reflecting on just how expensive end-of-year celebrations can be and how quickly they can turn from joyful to stressful. But one local initiative is helping fight the rising cost of clothing and accessories, one donation at a time.
Operation Formal Wear is once again underway, seeing the Canberra Lake Tuggeranong Lions Club provide free formal outfits to graduating students in Years 6, 10 and 12, as well as teachers.
Following a successful run in 2025 – which saw thousands of formal wear items donated – the club is once again collaborating with other community groups and small businesses, collecting donations of new and second-hand formal attire.
The aim is to help families save money and enable graduates to confidently attend their formal, and they’re calling for donations ranging from shoes and socks to jewellery, dresses, suits, shirts, ties and more.
The collected items will be available to browse across two separate weekends, with something for students in all areas of Canberra.
For northsiders, St John Paul II College in Nicholls will be housing the donated goods on Sunday 20 September from 10 am.
On Friday 9 October, private appointment-only sessions will be available for southsiders at the Westwood Lodge in Kambah, as well as public sessions on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October from 10 am.
With drop-off points all over Canberra, there are plenty of opportunities to donate quality formalwear until mid-September.
It’s no secret that a good outfit can change your life. And now that people have the perfect excuse to clean out their closet, they can do so knowing that their donation is literally doing just that for students looking forward to a special night out.
