IKEA wants to meet you under the mistletoe

Does anything get Canberra into the Christmas spirit like a cheeky meeting under the mistletoe?

It’s been over a year since our beloved IKEA opened in Canberra and to celebrate, they’re bringing us an incredible installation of Christmas LED lights, with a twist.

A bright cluster of Christmas mistletoe will adorn city walk to raise awareness and embody IKEA’s dreams of sustainability this Friday 16 December.

Following the launch of the IKEA PEOPLE & PLANET POSTIVE report earlier this year, IKEA reinvigorated their campaign for more sustainable lighting, which is the main focus of the mistletoe installation, where every bulb will be planet friendly LED.

In the report, IKEA found that 70 per cent of Aussies were looking for easy ways to save money and do their part for the environment but almost half find it challenging to know where to start.

In response to these findings, it was IKEA’s aim to raise awareness of how switching to LED light bulbs can help consumers live a more sustainable life at home and help Australians save money in the lead up to Christmas. The LED Mistletoe will be the first of its kind.

“Without considering the huge cost benefits of swapping to LED, consumers often believe making the change is too expensive,” says a spokesperson from IKEA. “IKEA want to raise awareness amongst Australians that by swapping traditional incandescent or halogen light bulbs to LED is an easy way for Aussies to save money and live a more sustainable lifestyle. What’s more, Australians can save up to $1.08 billion by simply swapping their household lightbulbs.”

So how are they hoping Canberrans will get the message about sustainable lighting? They’re inviting the first 100 mistletoe ‘participants’ to swap their old incandescent, halogen or CLF Christmas bulbs for money saving, sustainable LED equivalent, for free.

IKEA hopes the installation will educate everyone about sustainability in a fun and shareable way, with participants able to send a sustainable Christmas card featuring a photo of them under the mistletoe to their friends via social media.
