Wellness Roadtest: Capital Complementary Therapies Centre

Posted on
For some time now, I have been aware of moments of synchronicity.
These moments serve as an alert, identifying things I need to be aware of or that are important. Moments when pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place; patterns come out of the blue and you connect the dots.
For a while now, I’ve loved meditation. The meditation at the end of a yoga session is one of the reasons I love yoga so much, but with the cold weather, and changes in my gym’s timetable I haven’t been making the time for it. Like many people, I also find winter to be a tough time – I really feel the cold, I miss being outside all the time.
When I was given the opportunity to visit Rhonda D at Capital Complementary Therapies Centre (CCTC), if I’m being honest I wasn’t sure what to expect. As you can tell, the name doesn’t give much away but I was willing to give it a try.
It turns out, as Rhonda explained to me when I arrived at CCTC’s Lonsdale Street clinic that she specialises in self-empowerment, self-discovery and stress reduction – perfect for an end of winter pick-me-up. Rhonda achieves these through one or a combination of the following: essential oils, music, Energy Balancing (Reiki), mentoring or counselling, hypnotherapy, Deep Relaxation, Soul Retrieval, crystals, connecting you with your ‘Soul Self’.
At the beginning of the session, Rhonda spoke to me about the importance of balance in our lives. When she spoke the word ‘balance’ my synchronicity radar pinged – while watching Sesame Street with my son that morning, the word of the day had in fact been BALANCE. Clearly, this is an area that needs my attention.

Rhonda began by choosing an essential oil to support me – lime. She then explained that in the session she would take me through a Reiki session and also cleanse my chakras. For both sessions I lay on her table, covered with a warm blanket.
I’d had a Reiki session in the past and I even use a Reiki relaxation method to help me get to sleep when I am having difficulty switching off. As soon as Rhonda told me this would be included I was looking forward to it as an opportunity to switch off from my other commitments, disconnect from the world and just be present in time for a moment.
The Reiki session involves some light laying of hands, and for the chakra cleanse, Rhonda verbally guides you through the process. Rhonda explains that the verbal guidance is not required but that it is often useful for the participant, especially if they are not familiar with their energetic body, the Aura.
As the treatment went along, Rhonda shared with me her background that brought her to her current practice. Her story is hers to share with you but it is certainly fascinating. As Rhonda worked through my chakras, at a certain point I felt an incredible sensation, as though a weight literally lifted from the front of my body. While she identified different points that she felt required more cleansing than where I felt this sensation, the overall experience was extremely restorative.
As hard as I try to explain it to you, it really is something you need to experience for yourself. The funny thing is I don’t think you need to be a believer in alternative therapies to benefit from it, so don’t let your uncertainty of something ‘different’ prevent you from giving it a go.
Afterwards, I felt a significant difference, I felt calm, relaxed and happy. It was like a week’s worth of meditating combined into one session. Rhonda advised that some people in high-stress roles come to her as frequently as fortnightly, to let go, gain clarity and see things from a new perspective.
I may have never thought of doing a session like this before, but I now realise that, to me, a session with Rhonda is similar to doing something that nurtures me deep inside, taking time out just for me – always on my ‘to do’ list but as other necessities crop up I relegate these to a lower priority and consider them an indulgence. When in fact, doing this kind of treatment actually can make me more productive in all the other areas of my life.
The session was a great reminder that it is not only ok, but completely necessary for me to ensure I prioritise time for myself amongst my other commitments.
