Fitness Roadtest: Anytime Fitness

Posted on

They say the best things in life make you sweaty.

Last night I left Fyshwick at midnight feeling sweaty, breathless and exhausted. What was I doing? Minds out of the gutter please! I had just finished a workout at the newly revamped Anytime Fitness Fyshwick.

These are the two greatest and most obvious elements of Anytime: there are not one but two clubs within 5 kilometres of my apartment (one of the 14 currently in the ACT), and you can choose to workout there anytime you please – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Convenience, however, is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Anytime.

2016 is going to be a massive year for Anytime Fitness in the ACT. Think new clubs, small group personal training, renovations, upgrades and more. Just ask Alex Zeitlhofer, Manager and Owner of Anytime Fitness Fyshwick.

“Anytime Fitness has another massive year planned in our efforts to make people Feel Something Better. As a region, we’ll have four total re-fresh clubs, including upgrading all cardio and strength equipment, fresh paint, flooring and club layout. These clubs are something to behold once they are re-fitted – Civic, Tuggeranong, Dickson and Queanbeyan are up this year!”

If the Fyshwick club is anything to go by, then we should all be very excited. I was there last night and set up a HIIT circuit for myself, taking up essentially a whole room without having to share any equipment or space with anyone – the space is enormous and really well designed. There’s essentially every piece of equipment you could imagine – all your cardio machines, rowers, free weights, pin loaded weights, TRX systems, steps, a sled, crossfit style rigs, bosu balls, kettle bells and more.

“Our Fyshwick club is the most recent to go through its refresh. We were able to double the size of the club, increase the range of strength and cardio equipment and create a stand alone small group and classes room, which is in line with the shift that Anytime Fitness is taking in 2016 with the introduction of classes and group sessions. The transformation is remarkable.”

It’s not just the existing clubs getting an upgrade – there will be a brand new club opening in Casey which will be the 15th in the region.

“Along with new clubs, we will also be holding our 12 Week Challenge and gala dinner, which partners with The Healthy Life Challenge.”

The Healthy Life Challenge is an eight week program that acts as a precursor to Anytime’s 12 Week Challenge which takes place later in the year. Currently in it’s second week, the Challenge is heavily focused on small group training and bootcamps.

The move towards small group training comes as a result of listening to the needs of their members.

“At Anytime Fitness, we care about members and their health and fitness journeys. Our clubs are designed to make the gym less intimidating and more welcome. We are forever including more services to our clubs to accommodate for more of what people want – like personal training, small group classes, online support for nutrition and training, larger free weight areas, functional training zones, challenges, outdoor bootcamps… the list goes on! We are for ever trying to make it easier, more convenient and desirable for people to work out and be healthy,” says Alex.

I can definitely see what they mean from my experience training at Anytime in Fyshwick. For such a large and well equipped space, there’s a surprising amount of privacy. The small group training area is separated from the main gym floor, and there are different zones for different kinds of activities.

I had also visited the club in peak hours and was surprised at the range of fitness levels and abilities in the gym – feedback that I’d also heard from friends that train at Anytime clubs in locations across Canberra.

“We pride ourselves on being the club for everyone, the beginner, the experienced trainer and everyone in between. We are not showy, and egos are left at the door. Although Anytime Fitness is a global franchise all owners and managers are locals that grew up in the area and establish great personal connections with the members. There is a ‘small club’ community feel to every club regardless of floor size.”

Feeling inspired to check out an Anytime Fitness membership? Be sure to head along to their Annual Sale this Wednesday 10 February.

“We don’t often discount our prices” explains Alex, “but this is the one day that we are waiving the joining fee, saving you $99 and other inclusions. Get down to your local club, meet the team and start your fitness journey sooner.”
